The importance of playing with your cat

8/11/2026

Interactive play is one of the best ways to build a strong bond with your cat. Besides being fun, regular play helps develop trust, provides exercise, releases excess energy, and prevents boredom and stress. A cat who enjoys a daily dose of playtime is usually a happier, healthier cat.

Activity is especially important for indoor cats. Without enough stimulation, some cats may become bored, anxious, overweight, or develop unwanted behaviors. A few minutes of interactive play every day can make a big difference.

The Most Important Part of Playtime Is You
You may have plenty of cat toys around your apartment, but most of them become much more interesting when you get involved.

Interactive toys such as fishing-pole or wand toys allow your cat to behave like the natural hunter she was born to be. By moving the toy like prey—sliding, darting, hiding, and slowly creeping across the floor—you awaken your cat’s instinct to stalk, chase, and capture.

How you move the toy matters
Avoid waving it constantly in front of your cat’s face or moving it so quickly that she has no chance to follow it. Cats in the wild usually stalk their prey before attacking. Move the toy across your cat’s field of vision, occasionally allowing it to disappear behind furniture or around a corner.

Cats are built for short bursts of activity rather than long periods of running
Encourage your cat to chase the toy, but give her opportunities to pause and catch her breath. Most importantly, let her win. Your cat should be able to catch her “prey” several times during the game. Playtime should be satisfying, not frustrating.

As you finish the session, gradually slow down the movement of the toy and let your cat catch it one final time. Allow her to enjoy her captured “prey” for a minute before putting the toy away.
Picture
Try to schedule interactive play every day. It doesn’t need to take much time: one or two sessions of around 10–15 minutes can provide plenty of stimulation for many cats.

The benefits are much greater than the time involved. Regular play can help your cat stay physically active, build confidence, strengthen her trust in you, reduce stress, and provide an important outlet for natural hunting behaviors.

Every cat is different, of course. Younger and more energetic cats may want longer or more frequent sessions, while older cats may prefer shorter and gentler games.

Put Interactive Toys Away After Playtime
Interactive toys should normally be stored between play sessions rather than left on the floor all day. Keeping them out of sight helps make playtime feel special and exciting. More importantly, strings, feathers, elastic pieces, and worn parts can become dangerous if your cat chews or swallows them while you are not around.

Your cat can still have access to safe “solo” toys when you are away, including toy mice, balls, puzzle feeders, and other toys designed for unsupervised use.

Cats are often described as low-maintenance pets, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need attention and stimulation. Neglecting exercise and play can contribute to boredom, weight gain, stress, and behavioral problems.

Keeping Your Cat Active While You’re Away
When you travel, maintaining your cat’s normal routine—including attention and playtime—is important.

Kitty in NY provides experienced, loving cat caregivers who will make sure your cat receives the companionship and activity she needs while you’re away.

Our cat sitting visits are a great option for short trips and for shy or territorial cats who are happiest staying in their own home. For longer trips, our in-home cat boarding service offers your cat the comfort of staying in a carefully selected caregiver’s home, with personal attention and plenty of opportunities for play.

Contact Kitty in NY to find the best cat care option for your next trip.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

I am a writer who lives alone in a large studio apartment in midtown Manhattan. I had two wonderful cats – Bo Diddley and Roxy - here for 20 years. They both died of cancer in the same year and I was so heartbroken I didn’t ever want to have my own cat again. But when I took care of a girlfriend’s cat when she went on vacation, I realized how much I love having a little furry creature in my life, so I signed up with Kitty In NY.
Picture
Antoinette with one of her kitty guests
I love boarding and visiting cats and I adore taking photographs of them. My apartment, which is totally cat-proof, has a lot of old-fashioned quilts, desks, trunks and colorful objects that I use as backgrounds for pictures. I swear, cats know how good they look in my shots and they pose with very little persuading. I will care for your four-footed friend as if it were my own. I also have my Red Cross emergency pet medicine certification.
If you live in Midtown Manhattan Antoinette is the perfect option to take care of your cat/s while you're away. She can visit your cat in your apartment, cat sitting services, or you can bring your cat to her apartment where he/she will be the only pet until you come back. Our cat boarding service is perfect for mid-long term. Contact Kitty in NY with more details about the service you need.

Cool facts!

7/13/2026

As any cat owner knows, cats are amazing creatures. We've seen them run, jump and they make an impact on our lives every day. We collected some facts about their senses and abilities:

Sense of smell: cat's sense of smell is fourteen times stronger than a human's. Cats depend on their sense of smell to survive. It is their most important sense. Cats use scent to find food, mates, enemies, their own territory... their life depends greatly on how accurate their sense of smell is.

Cats have a wide range of vocal sounds. They can make about 100 different sounds. Dogs only make about 10.

Cat's eyes are pretty incredible. They do not see better than humans (in human terms) but their eyes have a different purpose. They smell the world (humans "see" the world). Cats use their eyes to hunt, they need to find the prey and focus on movement (not details). They can also see without much light. Cats have a wider field of view (200 degrees, compared to humans' 180-degree). Cats also have a greater range of peripheral vision, all the better to spot that mouse in the corner. Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are active at dawn and dusk. That may be why they need such good night vision. Their eyes have six to eight times more rod cells, which are more sensitive to low light, than humans do. In addition, cats' elliptical eye shape and larger corneas and tapetum, a layer of tissue that may reflect light back to the retina, help gather more light as well. That is why their eyes shine at night.

Your average healthy housecat with no training, no conditioning, no stretching, and no carb or protein loading can bolt at an amazing speed of about 30 mph (The average man jogs at a speed of 8.3 mph). All the cat would need for such an athletic feat is a little motivation. Cats can jump as much as five times their height. (a man jumping nearly 30 feet).

Your iPad does about 170 million operations per second. Your cat’s brain does 6.1 trillion operations per second. Researchers also say that short-term memory of cats (at least when it comes to recalling where food was hidden) lasts about 16 hours. For dogs, it’s only about five minutes.

We know cat's tongues are scratchy. That sandpaper feel is because a cat's tongue is lined with tiny elevated hooks called papillae that help hold prey in place. And unlike dogs that “scoop” water into their mouths – and all over the floor – cats use the tip of their tongue to pull water upward, closing their jaws before gravity causes spillage, in an impressive four laps per second.

On average, the lifespan of a cat is 12 years (64 human years) while dogs average 11 years (60 human years). In the past two decades, cats’ longevity increased 10 percent, more than twice as much as dogs. Some cats live up to 20 years. The oldest cat in history was Creme Puff (born on 3 August 1967 and lived until 6 August 2005) - an amazing 38 years!
Picture
Many studies show that no matter their preferred species, pet parents have better rates of blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride than those without pets. One study indicates that cat owners were 40 percent less likely of having a heart attack than those in feline-free homes.

At Kitty in NY we love your cat! When you have to leave the city for a few days (or weeks) we'll be glad to help you take care of him/her, until you come back. We propose a wide range of pet-free homes with caregivers who love cats. Your cat will be the only pet in the apartment. We also propose cat sitting services for shorter periods. Great people we have met! - Tabish

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Tabish is a world traveler who has lived abroad and now resides in a charming one bedroom townhouse on the upper west side of Manhattan.

Growing up in Kenya, I was surrounded by wildlife. One of my earliest memories as
a child of 4 or 5 years of age is watching a lion cub, the cutest thing I’d ever seen. I
wanted to take it home, but my dad said I could have a kitten instead that was just as cute and from the same family. The rest, as they say is my cat history.
I have worked in the humanitarian sector in Europe, Africa, and Asia, using my
fluency in English, Swahili, Punjabi and Urdu.

My other passion had always been for fashion. I studied towards a M.A at Central St Martins, London, which opened up opportunities to work with artisans in Kenya, Gambia and Nepal to create artisanal jewelry and textile collections. It also enhanced my inherent talent for fashion styling. My motto is, Wear Color Every Day.
Picture
Tabish provides both services: in-home boarding and cat sitting visits. If you decide to board your cat, your kitty will have plenty of room to roam and play in this book filled and antique furnished home. Tabish works from home, adores cats, and has cared for many. Tabish will enjoy visiting your cat/s in your apartment and will send an update after every visit.  She cherishes their affectionate nature and is looking forward to getting to know your darling!

Kim provides in home-boarding services in the East Village, NYC

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

My name is Kim. I'm an interior designer that recently relocated my design studio in my two bedroom apartment. I recently created a new business "the curated home office" that is completely virtual.  Now I have time to be home and not running around or directing a design staff. Cats are the style queens and kings so I will have to ask them if the paint color is the right shade.
Picture
My first cat appeared out of nowhere on the roof of my house, two weeks after my father and grandmother died suddenly. I realized at the tender age of 12 that cats were always going to be part of my life. They always find me.

Living in Tokyo a cat appeared in my window . I found Bee Bee, Chi Chi and the Boo
under similar circumstances, abandoned and in need of a home . I also rescued a dog from a dumpster with cigarette burns . Her name was Pitunia (yes a tiny pit bull ) She was more like a cat than a dog living with two other felines. She lived to be 14 years so now you know I am not spring chicken. Like I said  they find me.

My  Millie  cat , renamed Millie Vanili had a lot of health issues at 15.  I recently had to put her down during the height of the pandemic. It was traumatic .

I am not ready to adopt another cat quite honestly and I miss them so dearly ... why not show that love to another's sweetie pie. I am the perfect aunt I always have gum and tissues in my bag and I always have catnip and toys in my house.

If you're located on the Lower East Side or East Village, Kim will provide a perfect home for your furry friend until you're available. In-Home Boarding is a good solution for long term or very social cats. Contact us and send more details about the service you need. We'll be glad to help you.

I can’t even begin to express how amazing Kim was and how happy our kitty, Little Bits, was staying with her! We could tell from the second our zoom meeting with her started that she was going to be an amazing caretaker for our new family member. It’s obvious how much Kim loves kitties and how warm and fun she’d be as a sitter. She updated us on our little girl with pictures and videos and emails. It was really hard to leave our new addition in someone else’s home so soon after rescuing her, but Kim made it so easy and comforted us the whole time we were gone. I couldn’t imagine a better cat sitter exists out there!

I am so lucky to have met Kim.
Kim is a very friendly lady, she is gentle and enthusiastic, and smiles all day. She took great care with my little boy cat I named Draco, more then I could have imagined. She cared for Draco like a mother to a son. She used to have experience with several cats and dogs, and she knows very well how to take care of a cat. She knows what cats like, what they need, what their behavior and emotions are like, and how to take care different kinds of them.

Half a year ago, I had to leave Draco along in New York City, and my heart broke, but thankfully, I found Kim. The first time I saw her home through the video, I felt like I can trust her—her room is very warm and clean, with wood floor, carpets; it all felt very peaceful. Her windows were well protected and it just felt like the best place for my cat to be.

In the last half year, she is just like what I felt and even better. Thanks to her, I was not that worried about Draco’s wellbeing (although I worried for him and missed him dearly). She treated Draco as a friend and family member. She combed Draco’s hair every day, and let Draco stay in his favorite spot on the carpet. She gave him premium wet food. Draco was getting sunshine and look out to the street every morning, sleeping with her at night. I realized that I hadn’t been treating him to the level that Kim was - I learned many good habits from her.

She also sent me Draco’s photos every week, which gave me the chance to see what he was up to and how he looked. In the video and photo, I could see Draco trusted and loved her. Under her care, when I got Draco half a year later, I found out he become more gentle and soft, kinder, leaner and stronger.

Draco is back in my arms right now, I hope Kim can find another little friend to keep company. And Hey! Believe me, she will be your best choice.

I saw four families on Kitty in NY, met all of them, and have one experience with another lady two years ago. No one was as good as Kim. She has great experience, friendly, kind, and so caring. She will take very good care of your cat, because she is their friend and keeps them company.

Cat Boarding in Crown Heights, Brooklyn: Meet Meghan

6/29/2026

Finding the right place for your cat while you are away can make all the difference. Some cats do best in a calm home environment where they can settle in, explore at their own pace, and receive personal attention without the stress of being surrounded by other animals. For cat parents looking for in-home cat boarding in Brooklyn, Meghan offers a quiet, comfortable, and cat-ready space in Crown Heights.

Meghan lives in a clean and modern one-bedroom apartment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Her home is peaceful and well suited for cats who enjoy a relaxed environment. The apartment is calm, tidy, and prepared to welcome feline guests, with fully screened windows for added safety. Because Meghan does not have pets of her own at the moment, visiting cats can enjoy her apartment as the only pets in the home.

Meghan grew up in a house with cats and has loved being around them her whole life. That early experience helped her understand how different each cat can be. Some cats want attention right away, while others need time to adjust to a new space. Meghan is attentive to those differences and understands the importance of respecting each cat’s routine, personality, and comfort level.
Picture
She enjoys giving cats attention and playtime when they are in the mood, but she also knows when to give them space. Her home is especially suitable for cats who prefer a calm environment and one-on-one attention.

In her free time, Meghan enjoys going for walks, spending time in the park, trying new restaurants, traveling, reading, and practicing yoga. Her calm and grounded personality is reflected in the kind of environment she offers: relaxed, warm, and welcoming.

For Brooklyn cat owners, Meghan’s Crown Heights location is a convenient option for in-home cat boarding.

At Kitty in NY, we specialize in cat sitting and in-home cat boarding throughout New York City. Our boarding service allows your cat to stay in a caregiver’s private apartment, where your cat will be the only pet in the home. For cats who prefer to remain in their own familiar environment, we also offer cat sitting visits in the client’s apartment. We serve Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and nearby areas, helping cat owners find safe, loving, and personalized care while they travel.

At Kitty in NY, we are always happy to introduce caring, responsible cat lovers who can provide a safe and comfortable home for your cat while you are away. Today we would like to introduce Andrea, a wonderful caregiver located in Harlem, Manhattan.

Andrea lives in a spacious one-bedroom apartment with plenty of natural light. Her home is clean, comfortable, and fully prepared to welcome a visiting cat. All windows are screened, and the apartment offers enough room for a cat to explore, relax, look outside, or find a quiet corner when needed.

Andrea has had cats for most of her adult life and cared for her own cat for 15 years. Although she does not currently have pets, she misses having a cat around and would love to share her home with a guest cat while helping another cat parent travel with peace of mind.

One of Andrea’s strengths is that she understands that every cat has a different personality. Some cats are affectionate right away, while others need time, space, and patience before they feel comfortable. Andrea knows how important it is to respect a cat’s boundaries and allow each cat to adjust at their own pace.

Andrea is a retired nurse and has experience with pills and injections, which can be very helpful for cats who need medication during their stay. Finding the right cat boarding option in New York City can make a big difference when you need to travel. Some cats do better in a calm home environment where they can receive regular attention, gentle care, and a consistent routine. Elliot offers cat boarding in a spacious and very clean one-bedroom apartment in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where he lives with his girlfriend.

The apartment is spacious and cat ready, which helps create a relaxed environment for cats who may need a little time to adjust to a new place.

One of the advantages of Elliot’s setup is that he works from home. This allows him to offer regular presence, attention, and supervision throughout the day. For many cats, especially those who enjoy quiet company or need reassurance in a new environment, having someone nearby can be very helpful.

Elliot has a genuine love for cats and understands the importance of patience and softness when caring for them. What Is Your Cat Really Saying?

6/9/2026

Anyone who lives with a cat knows that cats have their own way of “talking.” A short meow by the food bowl, a dramatic cry from another room, or a soft trill when you come home can all mean different things.

Scientists are now paying more attention to feline communication. Domestic cats seem to use meows mostly with humans, not with other adult cats. Over time, many cats develop their own personal vocabulary with the people they live with. Your cat may have one sound for food, another for attention, and another for “please open this door right now.”

New AI tools are being designed to analyze cat vocalizations and identify possible meanings, such as hunger, stress, affection, or discomfort. These tools are still developing, and they cannot replace a loving owner’s observation, but they show something cat lovers already know: cats are intelligent, expressive, and very good at training humans to understand them.

The key is context. A meow means more when we notice where the cat is, what time it is, her body language, and whether her behavior has changed. A sudden increase in crying, or a big change in vocal habits, may also be a sign that a vet visit is needed.
Picture
At Kitty in NY, we know every cat has her own personality, routine, and communication style. Our cat sitting service lets your cat stay comfortable at home while a caring sitter checks food, water, litter, and provides attention. We also offer in-home boarding with carefully selected caregivers for cats who do well in a calm, cat-friendly home.

Whether your cat is shy, playful, talkative, senior, or wonderfully mysterious, Kitty in NY can help you find the right care while you are away. Contact us to learn more about our boarding and sitting services in New York City.

She describes herself as detailed and punctual, qualities we value highly when matching caregivers with our clients.

William did an amazing job caring for my 4 month old kitten. He gave him the attention he needed as a playful kitten and sent frequent updates that helped me relax while I was away. He is very knowledgeable with cats and very attentive to their behaviours!

William took fantastic care of my cats Remy and Georgia in August! They are young and can be a handful and he handled them great. Georgia is a kitten and it was her first time being at a sitter… She refused to eat for several days, but William was so great about trying everything he could to get her to eat, and she finally did!
I would definitely recommend and use him again. I also loved how communicative he was - especially when I knew Georgia was not eating, he was giving me plenty of updates that helped me not to worry too much.

William took excellent care of my cat who is pretty high maintenance and not very sociable. He made a point of learning about her preferences, daily routine, eating habits, likes and dislikes, etc. From the moment I met William I knew that my cat would be in very good hands. William loves and understands cats. He sent me daily updates with pictures and videos. My cat is rather hard to please and is not usually friendly with strangers. I was amazed at how quickly she warmed up to William. They say that cats are good judges of character. William is such a warm, kind and caring person that even my shy and unsocial cat felt at ease with him. I think she received more attention from him that she does from me. I would highly recommend William and will be happy to use his services in the future.

William was extremely attentive to my cats and was very patient to learn about each of their individual personalities. He provided me many updates and I felt very at ease knowing that he was providing very high quality care. His updates each day were also very thoughtful -- I didn't worry at all while I was away. I think William is my favorite sitter so far since discovering Kitty in NY. He truly deserves more credit!!

Everything went really well for my cat Matilda’s stay with William.

William took really good care of Matilda, was very thoughtful for her needs and kept me updated throughout. She settled in straight away and looked very relaxed and happy which gave me huge peace of mind while away.

We will be in touch next time we go away so we can book William to care for her again!

William went above and beyond in his care for Cleo. He sent me photos of her every few days with updates on how she was doing. He also took her to the vet when she was ill. He was very good about staying in communication with me and Cleo enjoyed her time with him.Bill was very thorough and meticulous in following the care instructions and providing a comprehensive update every day through text.

In-home cat boarding can be a wonderful option for cats who do well in a calm home environment. Instead of staying in a cage or a busy facility, your cat stays in a private apartment where they can receive personal attention, follow their usual routine, and enjoy a quieter experience.

Mohammed lives with his wife in a clean, spacious one-bedroom apartment. Their home is calm, well kept, and thoughtfully prepared for cats, with screened windows for added safety. Both Mohammed and his wife genuinely enjoy the company of cats and understand how important it is for pet parents to feel confident when they are away.

Professionally, Mohammed is an architect, and his organized, attentive personality comes through in the way he approaches cat care. He is intelligent, responsible, and easy to communicate with, which helps make the booking process smooth for both clients and our team. He understands that every cat has a different personality, routine, and comfort level, and he is happy to follow each cat’s specific needs. His goal is to make every cat feel safe, relaxed, and well cared for while their owners are away. Whether a cat is playful, shy, independent, or affectionate, Mohammed is happy to give them the time and space they need to feel at home.
