Are cats protective?

5/31/2014

Cats have the reputation of being aloof, independent creatures who only care about their grooming, getting their rest in the warmest (or coolest) spot and eating twice a day. Cat owners know this is all true but are familiar with other side of their cats' personality. Even humans who did not have a high standard of cats as pets will agree after sharing their lifes with a cat for a while.

Cats channel energy around them. Our loving and sleepy long haired cat, Cory, is always quiet and sweet. One night we were having an argument in the apartment. At a certain point it became quite a little aggresive. Cory run like crazy against my friend and bit his ankle. We were both shocked! Afterwards we realized there was too much negative energy, the high volume and gestures had shocked our Cory who did not understand what was going on.

Siamese cats are known for being very attached and protective of their humans. We all have a friend who has to lock her cat in the bedroom when she has guests. Cats think of the apartment as their territory. This includes humans, furniture and everything contained within the apartment. When strangers come to use their furniture and "their human" doesn't pay attention to them as usual, some cats don't take it well.

My cats always run to the door when the door bell rings. They want to know who's coming. They will inspect the new presence. Any visitor has to pass the test.

Many cat owners have anecdotes regarding their cat's protective behavior:

My cat was a mutt. I bought her at the market in Korea. She fetched like a dog, could open doors, walked on a leash and was very protective. She had to be locked up when strangers or my sister visited because she'd attack them. I don't know why other than being very smart and very attached to me. One day she jumped out of an open window to attack my sister as she bent over.

My friend has a domestic short hair that seems to think she's a dog. She's gets up in the window and growls if someone so much as walks by their house and she stands by the door and glares at visitors that she's not familiar with.

My ex stopped by last night for reasons that are not important but while he was standing in the livingroom Beastie Bear started creeping up on him. Greg warned him the cat was behind him. He did not want him to back up and accidently step on him. The ex turned and said "oh I see him" and stated "I like cats". A couple minutes passed and then out of no where Beastie wrapped his front paws around his leg, bit into his jeans and ran away. My ex was of course shocked but unharmed. Beastie is front declawed and he only got a hold of jean material. My ex even laughed about how strange the cat is.

Our youngish Maine Coon girl Squeak, who was an absolute ditz normally (if a riot to us) with seemingly no self-protective instincts, one day walked over a hot coil on our stove and burned her pads somewhat (not terribly serious, but required ointment for 10 days). Well, about a year later we had a new kitten (couple of months old) and he was about to jump up too (though the stove was off at the time), when Squeak ran over, butted him and shrieked. He ran away and never tried it again, and we just stood there marvelling!

When Is Cat Sitting the Best Option?

Cat sitting offers a personalized and stress-free alternative to boarding, especially beneficial for cats with specific needs or sensitivities.

1. Short Trips or Weekends Away
For brief absences, cat sitting allows your feline to remain in their familiar environment, maintaining their routine without the stress of relocation. This is particularly advantageous for cats that thrive on consistency.

2. Shy or Anxious Cats
Cats that are timid or easily stressed benefit from staying in their own home, where they feel secure. A professional sitter can provide gentle care, allowing the cat to warm up at their own pace without the pressure of unfamiliar surroundings.

3. Aggressive or Territorial Cats
Cats displaying aggressive behaviors often do so out of fear or territoriality. Keeping them in their home environment minimizes stress and potential triggers. Experienced sitters can manage these behaviors with patience and understanding, reducing the risk of incidents.

4. Cats with Litter Box Issues
Cats experiencing litter box problems may find comfort in their own space, where their preferred litter and box setup are maintained.
A sitter can monitor their habits and ensure cleanliness, helping to prevent further issues.

5. Multi-Cat Households
Managing multiple cats can be challenging in a boarding scenario. In-home sitting ensures that all cats receive attention and care without the added stress of new environments or potential conflicts with unfamiliar animals.

6. Senior Cats or Those with Medical Needs
Older cats or those requiring medication benefit from the consistency and comfort of home. A sitter can administer medications as scheduled and monitor for any health concerns, providing peace of mind.

Are cats so independent?

5/21/2014

You hear a lot "cats never make good pets because they are very independent", "a cat never becomes attached to you like a dog". Is this really true?

Cats can be affectionate and responsive. It all depends on what you offer them. If you ignore them they will ignore you back and enjoy and happy lonely existence in your apartment. If you spend time with them, talk to them and give them affection and play time they will become close and return just as much love an affection. They will bond with you.

The good part is that your cat can be independent too. They don't need the care and attention a dog requires. They can take care of themselves. That doesn't mean they don't love companionship, it just means they are happy with themselves.

Most cat owners think of their cats as close companions, as members of their family. Cat owners talk to their cats, share holidays with them, celebrate birthdays and special occasions with their cats. Cats greet their owners at the door and follow them to every room in the apartment. Some cats sleep on the bed of their owner every night. Cats can be a very important part of your life.

If you're thinking "my cat is not like that at all" you can change that. Regardless of your cat's personality, paying attention to your cat and spending time with them can make a big difference. Your cat already knows you, is used to your life and environment. Start calling him when you return home, talk to him when you feed him, get some cat toys and play with him. You will see how your relationship with your cat changes.
  • Understand that a cat can be just as loving, dependent and attached to you as you like
  • Cats can take care of themselves
  • Most cat owners in New York think of their cats as close companions, they share their life with their cats
  • If your cat is not friendly start paying attention to kitty
  • Do not leave your cat alone for long periods of time
Cats are emotional creatures. They can experience loneliness, depression, separation anxiety. You should not leave your cat alone for long periods of time in your apartment, even if your friend/neighbor comes once every few days to clean the litter box and feed him. Cat boarding is a much better solution. Your cat will enjoy the company of other humans who will interact with him. Our caregivers love cats, they will be happy to play and spend quality time with your cat. It will be like a "vacation' for kitty. Kitty in NY offers an excellent solution for mid-long term boarding solution, all over the city: we have great cat boarding options in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens. Your cat will be in good hands. Kitty in NY is the best cat boarding service in the city.
