For many cats, the easiest place to stay while you are away is the place they already know: home.

Cats tend to be strongly attached to their territory, routines, hiding places, favorite windows, litter boxes, and feeding schedules. For some, remaining at home with regular visits from a trusted caregiver can be considerably less disruptive than moving to a new environment.

Cat sitting is not necessarily the best option for every cat or every trip. But in the following situations, it is often an excellent choice.

1. Short Trips and Weekends Away
​For a weekend or a few days away, moving a cat out of the home can create more disruption than the trip itself. With cat sitting, your cat can keep the same feeding schedule, sleep in the same places, use the same litter box, and maintain a familiar daily routine. A caregiver visits the home to provide food, fresh water, litter box maintenance, playtime, attention, and any agreed-upon care.

For independent cats who are comfortable spending part of the day alone, this can be a particularly easy arrangement.

2. Shy, Timid, or Easily Stressed Cats
Some cats adapt quickly to new people and places. Others disappear under the bed when the doorbell rings. For shy or anxious cats, remaining in familiar surroundings can make a significant difference. They do not have to adjust simultaneously to a new home, new smells, unfamiliar sounds, and a new caregiver.

A good cat sitter will also understand that interaction should happen on the cat's terms. Sometimes the best care means playing and cuddling. Sometimes it means quietly refreshing food and litter while allowing a nervous cat to observe from a safe distance.

3. Territorial or Defensive Cats
A cat who becomes defensive around unfamiliar animals or environments may be much more comfortable at home. Behaviors such as hissing, swatting, hiding, or guarding territory are often intensified by stress. Keeping the cat in familiar surroundings removes one major source of that stress and allows an experienced caregiver to work within the cat's normal environment.

This can be especially helpful for cats who strongly dislike carriers, transportation, or unfamiliar spaces.

4. Cats with Litter Box Sensitivities
Cats can be remarkably particular about their litter boxes: the type of litter, box location, cleanliness, depth of litter, and even the style of the box itself. For a cat with a history of litter box problems or strong preferences, keeping the existing setup unchanged can be helpful. A sitter can maintain the normal cleaning routine and notice changes in litter box habits while you are away.

Sudden changes in urination or bowel habits can also indicate a medical problem, so unusual behavior should never automatically be assumed to be behavioral.

5. Homes with Multiple Cats
Moving one cat can be complicated. Moving three or four can become a small logistical operation. For multi-cat households, cat sitting allows everyone to remain together in their established environment, with their usual feeding stations, litter boxes, sleeping areas, and social dynamics intact.It also avoids transporting several cats and introducing them to an unfamiliar space at the same time.

6. Senior Cats and Cats Who Need Medication
Older cats often benefit from predictability. The same can be true for cats receiving regular medication or managing an ongoing condition. Depending on the cat's needs and the caregiver's experience, a sitter may be able to administer oral medications, pills, transdermal medications, inhalers, or other routine treatments while keeping the cat's schedule as consistent as possible.

For cats with significant medical needs, the care plan should always be discussed in advance so that everyone is clear about medications, instructions, emergency contacts, and what to do if something appears unusual.

Interactive play is one of the best ways to build a strong bond with your cat. Besides being fun, regular play helps develop trust, provides exercise, releases excess energy, and prevents boredom and stress. A cat who enjoys a daily dose of playtime is usually a happier, healthier cat.

Activity is especially important for indoor cats. Without enough stimulation, some cats may become bored, anxious, overweight, or develop unwanted behaviors. A few minutes of interactive play every day can make a big difference.

The Most Important Part of Playtime Is You
You may have plenty of cat toys around your apartment, but most of them become much more interesting when you get involved.

Interactive toys such as fishing-pole or wand toys allow your cat to behave like the natural hunter she was born to be. By moving the toy like prey—sliding, darting, hiding, and slowly creeping across the floor—you awaken your cat’s instinct to stalk, chase, and capture.

How you move the toy matters
Avoid waving it constantly in front of your cat’s face or moving it so quickly that she has no chance to follow it. Cats in the wild usually stalk their prey before attacking. Move the toy across your cat’s field of vision, occasionally allowing it to disappear behind furniture or around a corner.

Cats are built for short bursts of activity rather than long periods of running
Encourage your cat to chase the toy, but give her opportunities to pause and catch her breath. Most importantly, let her win. Your cat should be able to catch her “prey” several times during the game. Playtime should be satisfying, not frustrating.

As you finish the session, gradually slow down the movement of the toy and let your cat catch it one final time. Allow her to enjoy her captured “prey” for a minute before putting the toy away.

Try to schedule interactive play every day. It doesn’t need to take much time: one or two sessions of around 10–15 minutes can provide plenty of stimulation for many cats.

The benefits are much greater than the time involved. Regular play can help your cat stay physically active, build confidence, strengthen her trust in you, reduce stress, and provide an important outlet for natural hunting behaviors.

Every cat is different, of course. Younger and more energetic cats may want longer or more frequent sessions, while older cats may prefer shorter and gentler games.

Put Interactive Toys Away After Playtime
Interactive toys should normally be stored between play sessions rather than left on the floor all day. Keeping them out of sight helps make playtime feel special and exciting. More importantly, strings, feathers, elastic pieces, and worn parts can become dangerous if your cat chews or swallows them while you are not around.

Your cat can still have access to safe “solo” toys when you are away, including toy mice, balls, puzzle feeders, and other toys designed for unsupervised use.

Cats are often described as low-maintenance pets, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need attention and stimulation. Neglecting exercise and play can contribute to boredom, weight gain, stress, and behavioral problems.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Tabish is a world traveler who has lived abroad and now resides in a charming one bedroom townhouse on the upper west side of Manhattan. 

Growing up in Kenya, I was surrounded by wildlife. One of my earliest memories as
a child of 4 or 5 years of age is watching a lion cub, the cutest thing I’d ever seen. I
wanted to take it home, but my dad said I could have a kitten instead that was just as cute and from the same family. The rest, as they say is my cat history.
I have worked in the humanitarian sector in Europe, Africa, and Asia, using my
fluency in English, Swahili, Punjabi and Urdu.

My other passion had always been for fashion. I studied towards a M.A at Central St Martins, London, which opened up opportunities to work with artisans in Kenya, Gambia and Nepal to create artisanal jewelry and textile collections. It also enhanced my inherent talent for fashion styling. My motto is, Wear Color Every Day.

Tabish provides both services: in-home boarding and cat sitting visits. If you decide to board your cat, your kitty will have plenty of room to roam and play in this book filled and antique furnished home. Tabish works from home, adores cats, and has cared for many. Tabish will enjoy visiting your cat/s in your apartment and will send an update after every visit.  She cherishes their affectionate nature and is looking forward to getting to know your darling!​

Everything was great! Lucky is very skittish around other people, but when Xialen came to pick up the keys, he didn’t immediately bolt and it seemed like he recognized her!
I forgot to leave a list of instructions as I normally do and reached out to Xialen on the first day - but it was completely unnecessary. She did everything we discussed and dropped by before I realized I didn’t leave a note.
Xialen is intuitive, took great care to follow Lucky’s routine, and was even able to pick up and hold him on the last day while he purred, which doesn’t happen very often with guests! It’s obvious she works well with all types of cats and her pictures are truly amazing and look professional.
I will absolutely reach out again should Lucky need a cat sitter and will continue to recommend your company! You’re the best.

Oscar was a perfect caregiver to my Maxie on the two days I had to be away. When Oscar first met Maxie, he let Maxie sniff him in order for Maxie to get comfortable with him. He played with Maxie and took gorgeous pictures and videos of him during his visits, he cleaned the litter box, and after feeding Maxie, he took the empty cans of food with him to throw away elsewhere as there were no signs of discarded cans in the kitchen trash. Oscar took care of my cat for a little less than a week. I have zero complaints...everything went smoothly and Oscar followed all of my written instructions  (which weren't too intricate - fortunately, I don't have a high maintenance cat). Ruxandra is an amazing caregiver. This was my second time working with her. The first time, she fed my cats in my home, the second time, I boarded my cats in her home. Both times, she was incredibly attentive, asked great questions, was extremely communicative and caring, and sent great photos on a regular basis. My cats are very particular and aren't used to strangers, and took to Ruxandra very quickly. She is clearly an animal whisperer and has kind, calm, energy.
