My Cats - Poem by Charles Bukowski

                         I know. I know.
                         they are limited, have different
                         needs and
                         concerns.

but I watch and learn from them.
I like the little they know,
                         which is so
                         much.

                         they complain but never
                         worry,
they walk with a surprising dignity.
they sleep with a direct simplicity that
                         humans just can't
                         understand.

                         their eyes are more
                         beautiful than our eyes.
and they can sleep 20 hours
                         a day
                         without
                         hesitation or
                         remorse.

                         when I am feeling
                         low
all I have to do is
                         watch my cats
                         and my
                         courage
                         returns.

                         I study these
                         creatures.

                         they are my
                         teachers.

Patrizia: cat sitters that make it easy to leave for a few days

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

My first pet was Marco, a beautiful red marbled European cat. I was six. After the experience with him - he was totally wild - I knew I can have any kind of cats in the apt and so it was. I grew up rescuing stray cats from the street and curing them, we have a lot in Italy, for the happiness of my mother. Our family cat there is now seventeen years old.

I owe a lot to Kitty in NY for giving me the possibility to continue to take care of them and treat them like my own.

I am a personal chef and I can cook authentic Italian food. I am also a  jewelry designer with a passion for teaching, I teach art and Italian both to kids and adults. I design from home and spend most of day in the apartment. I adore to have cats around while I work, they are truly an inspiration for me.

Patrizia did an absolutely amazing job taking care of our kitten. We had just adopted him two weeks before, so he was still adjusting and learning to feel comfortable with us and in the space. He still hisses and runs and hides, but Patrizia was able to get him to come out and play, and even sent us a video of him purring! I read other reviews that said she is a cat whisperer, and I had the same experience - it was really wonderful that she was able to interact with our kitten so much. She sent us tons and tons of pictures, which I absolutely loved, especially since I had been nervous about leaving our kitten. But I had no need to worry - Patrizia was wonderful!

Patrizia was amazing! She did such a fantastic job with the cats. My cat Dakota is usually extremely timid and hides when we have caregivers come over. From the first visit, he was drawn to her and comfortable--not timid at all! She's a practical cat-whisperer! Patrizia also took special care take plenty of photos and provide us with updates every day after visiting. She simply could not have done a better job. Best cat caregiver ever!

We were very fortunate to have found Patrizia to take care of our Persian kitten for a weekend. Our little furry girl loved her and was well fed, combed and cleaned carefully. Our kitten is usually afraid of strangers and would hide under the couch, so the fact that Patrizia was able to hold her and interact with her without us present says volumes about Patrizia's expertise with cats! We also received pictures and updates while away. We will definitely ask for Patrizia in the future.

We had to go to Florida to work on our home there and needed to find a cat sitter in NY. After seeing the positive feedback on Yelp for Kitty in NY I felt at ease to pursue my enquiry in cat sitting services for our Nacho. This would be the first time using these services and we are so happy that we did. Jose was very prompt in his reply and provided information regarding the services for hire. Before I knew it, they had a match for us, Patrizia. We set up a video chat and I immediately felt comfortable in Nacho being in Patrizia care, was great, she sent us plenty of photos of Nacho which put us at ease. We will definitely use Kitty in NY, and ask for Patrizia in the future. Nacho was very happy with his new friend!

Patrizia was terrific. I realized i needed to bring in Sweet Pea the evening before we booked and she was totally acommodating.  Sweet Pea got sick the day beforehand and I was SO worried to drop off a sick kitten. Patrizia handled it so well. She was very reassuring and was able to administer the medicines as the vet instructed. My kitten returned to me in better health than when i left her!  I highly reccommend Patrizia!!  I hope she wants to watch Sweet Pea again.:)

Patrizia messaged me daily how Samson was doing with very cute and funny pics of Samson. I felt very relieved to hear from her and see the pics everyday, often twice a day.
Her apartment is very cat-friendly, windows facing a garden that attract birds and squirrels. In the pics Samson looked just so happy to be staying with her. Thank you Kitty in NY!

Jack Kerouac loved cats

4/8/2015

Jack Kerouac, author of On The Road, was a poet and novelist who was a pioneer of the “beat generation”.

Jack Kerouac loved cats, especially his cat Tyke. He talked about Tyke's death in his memoir Big Sur.

“The next sign is in Frisco itself where after a night of perfect sleep in an old skid row hotel room I go to see Monsanto at his City Lights bookstore and he’s smiling and glad to see me, says ‘We were coming out to see you next weekend you should have waited,’ but there something else in his expression — When we’re alone he says, ‘Your mother wrote and said your cat is dead.’
Ordinarily the death of a cat means little to most men, a lot to fewer men, but to me, and that cat, it was exactly and no lie and sincerely like the death of my little brother — I loved Tyke with all my heart, he was my baby who as a kitten just slept in the palm of my hand and with his little head hanging down, or just purring for hours, just as long as I held him that way, walking or sitting — He was like a floppy fur wrap around my wrist, I just twist him around my wrist or drape him and he just purred and purred and even when he got big I still held him that way, I could even hold that big cat in both hands with my arms outstretched right over my head and he’d just purr, he had complete confidence in me — and when I’d left New York to come to my retreat in the woods I’d carefully kissed him and instructed him to wait for me ‘Attends pour mue kitigingoo’ — But my mother said in the letter he had died the night after I left.”

purring cat to the moon
I sighed.”

How to cat-proof your home

4/4/2015

Make your home a safe environment for your cat. Cats are curious and love to play. You should take a few steps to make sure your home is a "safe playground".

Avoid poisonous plants. Cats chew on grass and plants. Some of our house plants can be irritating (even deadly) to cats. Keeps plants away from your cat. If your cat loves to chew green stuff you can grow your own cat grass.

Keep food off counters and away from your cat. Some cats eat anything!

Unplug electrical cords that are not in use. If your cat likes to chew this could cause a nasty shock. You can put cords in a cord protector box or coat them with a non toxic spray (available at pet stores).

Tie blind cords to avoid your cat getting tangled up. Keep them out of reach, tie them up behind the blinds.

Check the dryer and washer before using them. Cats love hidden spaces where they feel secure. Always keep the dryer door locked and check inside before turning it on. Kittens like to climb on top of refrigerators, freezers and behind drawers, you should check these spaces too.

Remove table cloths unless you're using them. Your cats will try to climb and make a mess of your china or crystal ware. These could all be messy, expensive and could safe you a stressful trip to the doctor (or the vet)

Be extremely careful with medicines. Keep all medicines in a secure cabinet or drawer. Be sure to pick any pill you might drop. Cats' livers are very weak, even a pain killer could be fatal.

Picture
Lock up any cleaning supplies. You should keep your cat from licking or chewing any cleaning product. They contain chemicals that could upset (or be dangerous) your cat's digestive system.

Put away breakable objects. Cats love to explore and will jump on table, shelves, knocking down by accident fragile items.  You also want to make sure your shelves are secured to the wall and will not fall apart when a cat jumps on them!

Put the lid on your toilet. A very young kitten could fall in and be unable to get out!

Kitty in NY makes sure our caregiver's apartments are cat proof. Your cat will enjoy a safe stay with experienced caregivers who love cats. Contact us with more details about the service you need, we'll be glad to help you.
