We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

My name is Luke Malachi. I am a 34 year old creative professional.
I have had a love for animals since I  was young.

I often watch a few of my friends' cats Zoey, Otis, and Rafley. So I am used to having cats in my space.

Not only is the company great to have, I honestly enjoy them being around.
Let me be their home away from home.

Cat memories: Louise and Jack Burns

6/24/2023

We asked our caregivers and clients to share with us some of their cat memories. Lynn sent us this beautiful memory of her cats in LA.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I adopted two rescue cats from a no-kill shelter. Jack Burns was an older cat, about eight years old, and had lived with an elderly couple that had died within a year of each other. Their children put Jack Burns in the shelter, and he had been there a year. As soon as I walked into the room of cats, he stopped and stared at me. The other cats seemed unaware of my presence, but he kept his eyes trained on me, and I felt a connection with him right away.

The other cat I adopted was a white kitten I named Louise, who had been found on an off-ramp to the Hollywood Freeway, and had only been in the shelter a few days. She was batting a dead cockroach across the floor, having a great time, and I imagined the toys I could give her.

The people at the shelter loaded both cats into cardboard carriers, and as soon as we got to my apartment, Jack Burns raced around checking to make sure all the comforts of civilization were there.

He ran into the bathroom and took a sip out of the toilet (I kept the lid down, after that). Then he ran into the bedroom, jumped up on the bed, and kneaded the pillows. Finally, he ran back to me and butted his head against me over and over, as if to say, Thank you! Thank you!

Both cats slept with me on my bed, and one night I remember waking to a terrifying, wild scream, coming from outside. Jack Burns, Louise and I all bolted upright in the bed, and then they jumped to the window sill and the three of us looked across the alley to the roof of the building next door, where several massive raccoons were having some kind of intense ritual together, screaming and bristling at each other.

I assume it was mating season, and there was also, coincidentally, a full moon, so the scene was well lit. Jack Burns and Louise pressed their faces against the window screen, watching the drama. Jack Burns made a low rumbling sound in his throat, but I think they knew the raccoons were out of their league, and not to challenge them too strenuously.

We watched for a long time, then the raccoons quieted and slipped off the roof, probably heading back to Los Feliz Boulevard. Raccoons and coyotes often came down from Griffith Park and crossed the boulevard in search for cat and dog food people had left outside, or open garbage cans.

Once it was quiet again, Jack Burns and Louise found their places on the bed; Louis on the pillow next to my head, and Jack Burns curled by my feet. I think the three of us were equally fascinated by the raccoons, and glad to be safe inside.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Tommy is a young professional who lives in a clean, sunny studio apartment in Astoria. He grew up with, and loved, a number of cats, and was thrilled to come upon 'Kitty in NY'. Tommy will pamper your kitty until you come back. He will send regular updates during the service.

Hello, my name is Tommy, I am an NYC semi-native and full-time animal lover.  I’m grateful to be a part of ‘Kitty in NY’ going on 7 years!  While I’ve grown with and adored many a pet, cats in particular have taught me that empathy, personality, love and sass aren’t solely human traits, they’re animal ones.  I find that getting a cat acclimated takes a patient, individualized, warm approach I am more than happy to provide; my sunny Astoria studio is quiet, clean and comfortable for all the doting a pet-guest can ask for and more.  I look forward to opening my home to you and your cat!

When I picked up my cat from Tommy, Mishka (my cat) was clearly very well taken care of and had zero adjustment issues. Tommy was also proactive in communicating and sending pictures of Mishka every other day, which I appreciated. This has been a very positive experience and I recommend Tommy without reservation.

Our cat is quite shy around others, but she seemed quite happy when we picked her up. He also took the time to send pictures of her while we were away. The caregiver was great.

4th of July can be particularly frightening to cats

Is your cat always scared? Fear and shyness have many causes, but can be overcome with patience and love. The key word is patience. Cats, like people, have different personalities. Your cat may be shy by nature, and may never become the "lap cat" you wanted. But with love, and patience, she may enjoy sitting on your lap for short periods, from time to time. You'll find yourself enjoying those moments even more. A difficult cat who loves you is very rewarding. You should let your cat set the pace and give her space.

Main causes of fear

Lack of Socialization
This could happen when the kitten is taken from the mother too soon. The mother cats trains socialization with humans, children, and other cats over a period of time. Kittens should stay with their mom at least for eight weeks; twelve weeks is better.
Your best way to go with a poorly socialized kitten is to get him used to one person in your home at a time, handle him gently,  talking to him in a soothing voice, as long as he his comfortable. Allow him to explore his surroundings at his own pace, do not rush the process. Always move slowly around a shy kitty. Once she is comfortable, another person can enter the socialization role.

Environmental Changes
Cats are creatures of habit and do not like change. They are addicted to their sourroundings and their daily routines. Environmental changes include moving furniture; noise, parties or construction; and introduction of new pets into the household. With any of these changes, it's best to give the cat a safe room for as long as needed. She may stay under the bed for a few hours (or days), coming out to eat and use the litter box. She will gradually become more comfortable and stay out longer periods. The pace varies a lot depending on each cat.

Fear in Cats

When working with fearful cats you should follow this advice: Do not stare directly into your cats eyes when trying to calm her. A direct stare is a sign of aggression among cats.

Fear of People
Unless your cat was born in your home, you don't know what her relationship was like with humans in her life, other than the information provided by the breeder, pet store or shelter. The cat may have fear of humans because of previous abuse.

Your cat can learn to trust humans, starting with yourself, but it will be a slow process. Let her set the pace. Eventually, once she is comfortable and trusts you, other humans in your life may follow the same process. She could remain a one-person cat for the rest of her life.

Loud Noises
This would be part of enviornmental changes. More specifically, loud noises, such as construction, parties, and holiday celebrations involving fireworks, such as New Year's Eve and the 4th of July, can be particularly frightening to cats. Since these activities are known of in advance, it is suggested to remove the cats to a safe room with a hiding space until the activities have ended.

Pure breed / Non pure breed

6/11/2023

All cats make good pets. Non pure breed cats (or mixed) come in short and long hair. DSH or DLH (Domestic Shorthair or Domestic Longhair) come in all sizes, colour patterns and hair length. Some resemble a pure breed and some don't. Most cats are non purebred.

Domestic shorthairs and longhairs make great pet companions but you take a few chances when adopting (or buying) a non purebred kitten. You are not sure how big it will grow, how the hair length will finally be or how his personality will develop. Even coat color can change over time.

Purebred kittens grow into adult cats that we can predict. You usually can see their mother and other cats of the same breed. You know the size, hair color and length and even some of the personality traits. Of course all cats are different (just like with different members of your family) but some breeds are known for being calmer than others, more vocal (or less), more attached to their humans than others.
Picture
Many Domestic Shorthairs cats will suit your life style but it's harder to predict which kitten will be the best choice. If your cat's personality (or looks) is on the top of your priorities maybe a pure breed is a safer option. Do you need a very social cat who enjoys a house with frequent visitors and big gatherings? Would a very active cat drive you crazy? Does a cat who meows very often bother you? Knowing more about cat breeds can help you make the best choice.

Pure breed or Domestic Shorthair or Longhair cats, they will both bring you joy and companionship. At Kitty in NY we provide the best cat care services for your cat during vacations, holidays, apartment renovations or business trips. In-home boarding at one of our caregiver's apartment is the best option for mid-long term services. Your cat will enjoy a home environment with 24 supervision by a true cat lover. Contact us with more details about the service you need, we'll be glad to help you.
