Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats sleep an average of 16-18 hours per day. The main reason is their past as wild felines. They have the physiology of a predator: they are born to chase and hunt (most of the times at night). Most wild cats follow this pattern. Hunting takes an amazing amount of energy. Whether your kitty is hunting for prey or running after a catnip toy, all that sleep he gets is reserve energy for running, climbing and stalking. Energy conservation is the main reason for such long hours of sleep.

Cats are mostly active between dusk and dawn. They sleep most of the day and wake up at midnight. As soon as your cat is done with breakfast she will find a comfy spot in your apartment and get ready for a long day of slumber.

Weather can also affect sleeping patterns. Cold or rainy days are occasions to take longer naps and keep warm under a blanket. Older cats and kittens tend to sleep 20 hours per day.

Take into consideration the age and weather but don't let your cat sleep all day. We already explained in another article the importance of playtime. Your cat will follow your schedule and stay awake around you if you interact with her. If your cat tends to be in the same room and sleeps close to you, it's a good sign.

Cats may sleep a lot but when they're awake they will make the most of their time.
