Maeve provides in-home boarding in Chelsea, Manhattan

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats.

Since childhood, I have been a kitty lover. I grew up in the country, and my family home was filled with cats. We raised mommy cats and litters and took in strays. I remember watching one of our kitties–Krispy Cat–give birth in our linen closet. I fell in love with the runt of the litter, Parsley, and carried that tiny kitten around so much my mom worried it would never learn to walk.

After college, when I got a home of my own, kitties followed suit. I took in two black kitties, one boy and one girl, and together we shared a home for 14 years. In time, they both seemed to grow tired of city life and migrated to my mom's home in the country, where they morphed into indoor/outdoor cats. They both lived happy, long lives, with my boy cat making it to 19 and a half years of age.

My career is as a home organization coach and lifestyle expert. I live in a Chelsea studio and spend much of my time at home blogging, marketing and supporting my clients. I’m looking forward to having your kitty in my home. There are lots of places to nap and hide, ample space to run and play. And I may have the world's best kitty brush. I've never met a cat who didn't absolutely love it. I look forward to meeting you!

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats.

I have been surrounded by cats since my earliest memories. My family had a couple of cats while I was growing up. I took a special liking to my cat Chico and we became best friends when I was young. He grew up with me and when we lost him it was devastating to our family. Since then, I haven't owned a cat but my sister recently brought one into the family again, as well as my grandmother and I get such a thrill out of being a kitty uncle. I get to spoil them, play, and give them all the love in the world.

I am a dancer living in NYC, I have a lust for life and a will to succeed. I just recently graduated from Broadway Dance Center Professional Program and I am signed to Clear Talent Group as a performer. I have a dream to perform on stages in France, Spain, Berlin, Canada, Bali, and I will never stop persisting for my goals. This life is really quite short and I want to do as much good with my time here that I possibly can.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats.

Growing up with dogs during my time in Mexico always made me curious to think how it was to have a cat. Ever since I moved to NY, I was set on the idea that I'd have a cat of my own. It had been years since I wanted one, so once I owned a cat it made me feel like the luckiest girl in the world. It wasn't until I found out that my poor, old cat was terribly sick. I had to put him down. Although I didn't own him for as much as I though I would (two years), I still think he taught me so much about what it is to own a cat, and how much care and importance I was willing to give. I certainly loved having him as company, can't say I don't miss him at times. I am happy to say though, that I was there for him till the very end. I am ready to give that same amount of care and importance to a cat while he is not with his own parents.

A bit about me -
I am a freelance writer who likes focusing on subjects such as art and fashion. I am also an aspiring actress who wants to wants to work more around Film and TV. I am originally from Mexico, but live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I have been living in the city for around three years now, every year loving it more and more. I am so excited to be able to share my space where I write and prepare for auditions with a special companion such as a cat. Can't wait to tell him/her some of my interesting stories.

My name is Anna, I am an artist, a teacher and a mom and I love kids and animals.  We always had pets growing up: cats, dogs, fish, lizards, birds, you name it.  Currently, our furries (a Shitzu dog and a tomcat--they are the same size and they are best friends!)  live upstate with my mother, enjoying the countryside, while my kids and I live in Jersey City with our birdie. Because of him I cannot have cat guests, but  I will gladly visit your felines in your home, keep them company, play with them and make sure they are looked after. I prefer to do home visits in West Village, Downtown Jersey City and Hoboken.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Hi there, cat parents! I grew up cherishing and caring for two cats, a fluffmeister named Kitty and a wiry little chap named Mouse. These whiskered angels opened my eyes to the many rewards that come with caring for pets, and to just how special and joyful kitty companionship can be when its built on love, attention, gentleness, and patience. (One of my favorite rewards: getting to witness endlessly adorable cat antics). Before joining Kitty In NY, I spent many years providing pet care in several capacities, including as a dog walker and as the go-to cat sitter for friends and acquaintances, happily taking their cats into my home whenever they had to leave town.

A bit more about me: I am a writer and part-time web developer living alone in a two-bedroom apartment. My apartment doubles as my office, so I'm just about always home. I love to be creative -- I'm currently exploring robotics as a hobby -- but mostly I'm just a big movie/TV nerd who likes to watch Bojack Horseman and GLOW on Netflix. If your cat stays with me, please don't hesitate to let me know about any needs or special requests. It would be my pleasure to do anything to make my new friend feel right at home, and to provide you with updates and photos as frequently and as detailed as you'd like.

How much sleep do cats need?

9/24/2018

Kellen Smith contacted us to share one of his articles. You can read more of his articles at tuck.com.
Picture
Curled up, stretched out, or with fluffy tails across their face, no one can deny that cats are professional sleepers. Spending more than half the day asleep, our feline companions can count themselves among the ranks of sleepiest animals.

Keep reading to learn more about feline sleeping patterns and how you can help your cat get better sleep.

How much do cats sleep? Cats sleep between 12 to 16 hours a day on average. Domesticated cats hail from those in the wild, who as predators can enjoy the luxury of sleeping more. For prey animals, on the other hand, staying awake is literally a matter of life and death.

Your particular cat’s sleeping patterns may vary, depending on her age and health. Kittens need more sleep – up to 20 hours – because they are spending so much energy growing into cathood. On the other end of the spectrum, older cats start to slow down around age 7 and need more rest, especially if they have arthritis or joint issues.

Are cats nocturnal?  While cats do spend a lot of time awake at night, they are more properly categorized as “crepuscular” than “nocturnal.”  This refers to them being most active at dawn and dusk.

In the wild, cats do much of their stalking at night, so domesticated cats still have it in their instincts to be active in the twilight hours when their prey are out and about. They are more likely to spend time dozing during the day, conserving their energy to hunt at night. Cats also have to eat multiple small prey in order to satisfy their appetite, so they catnap in between their hunts.

However, like dogs, domesticated cats are prone to adjust their sleep schedule to fit their owner’s schedule – sleeping more when you’re not around and less when you are.

Do cats experience sleep stages like humans do? Cats do progress from slow-wave sleep to REM sleep like humans and other mammals, but the time they spend in each stage, as well as a full sleep cycle, is much shorter.

Cats spend about 6 minutes in REM sleep, while humans will spend between 90 to 120 minutes in REM sleep per night. Look for twitching whiskers and eyelids to catch your cat dreaming.  Outside of REM, the majority of the time they’re in a sort of light sleep where their noses and ears stay on alert – ready to wake at a moment’s notice to hunt or protect themselves. During this stage, cats are able to sleep in an upright or sitting position simply by tensing their muscles.

Is my cat sleeping too much? Cats with less toys and playtime will sleep more out of pure boredom. However, if your cat seems excessively sleepy or lethargic when they are awake, it could be a sign of a health problem such as anemia or hyperthyroidism. They could also be in pain from feline arthritis.

Cats also tend to sleep more when they are overweight, so feeding your cat a healthier leaner diet can increase their energy and reduce their tendency to oversleep.

Don’t be alarmed if your cat snores. Some short-nosed cats, such as the Persian, Himalayan, and Exotic Shorthair breeds, are prone to snoring.

How can I help my cat sleep better?

1. Feed your cat a healthy diet.Cheaper foods tend to contain fewer nutrients. As a result, your cat will be less frisky and more lethargic. Give your cat better food to ensure more restful sleep.

2. Give your cat plenty of playtime. Cats like to play. If you don’t give them what they want, don’t be surprised when they wake you up at 2:00am by pawing at your face. You can keep them engaged during the day by placing a bird feeder outside a window. Then, place her kitty condo by the window at night so she can be entertained while you sleep.

3. Make a firm decision about inviting your cat into your bed.If you choose to let your cat sleep with you, like 62% of cat owners do, get a mattress large enough and with decent motion isolation so you’re not roused by her collar jingling during a dream. Cats are also very territorial, so think hard and know for sure you want to let her sleep with you. Once you allow cats into your bedroom, they’re not going to leave without a fight.

4. Do not give in to your cat’s pawing. If you want your cat to learn to leave you alone during the night, ignore her pawing. If you give in and start playing with her, she’ll learn that she can win and consider herself the dominant one in the house.

5. Feed your cat at night. Cats tend to sleep well after a feast. If your cat bother you while you sleep, you can use a timed food bowl to feed in to her natural instincts.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Growing up my family always acted as a foster family for cats and dogs. I remember countless times as a kid when my mom would pack me and my little sister into her car and go pick up an entire litter of abandoned kittens to puppies. It was always so exciting to get the new animals, clean them up and give them nicknames while we nursed then back to health so they would be able to find their forever homes. Even during college I would always take in an animal or two over the summers from overcrowded shelters to make sure they could eventually find a home. After moving to the city I’ve missed having a part time furry friend, however, finding KittyInNY has given me the perfect opportunity to give a furry friend the love, attention and care they need while their owners are away.

A little about me - I am a part time waiter in Midtown and I perform standup comedy a few times a week around the city. Originally I come from Florida but now I live in Astoria, Queens in my studio apartment.  Most of my time is spent writing at home and catching up with the Real Housewives of…well, every city. A cat would be the perfect companion to have while hanging around the apartment and working on new material for the next show!

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

My name is Gretchen and s
ome of my earliest memories include “Prunehead,” our family cat dashing away from me. She was a smart cat and knew to stay away from a curious toddler. I think this instilled a lifelong fascination with cats.

When I was nine, my family adopted two kittens from a shelter, Slick and Yes. Yes was a black and white Manx and was my cat. Because she would chase dogs out of the yard and bounce up a tree in mere seconds, I sometimes called her “The Super Cat.” We moved around growing up and they were my best friends and such a source of comfort.

Although I my landlord will not let me have a cat, I am happy that my boyfriend as a beautiful black cat that I have nicknamed “Babes.” We are also the proud parents of four parakeets.

Currently, I am taking some design classes and am getting ready to launch a services-based company for interior designers, so I do have flexibility in my schedule.

I would love the opportunity to visit your feline family member when you are away. I love to play with cats, groom them or just exchange glances if that is more their speed.

Karina is a dancer and life long cat lover. She lives in a studio apartment located on W. 71st. She has always been surrounded by pets and will love taking care of yours now that she doesn't have any cats of her own.

I love the arts and am involved in the dance world. I enjoy the theatre, love going to performances and love music. I live on the UWS.  I grew up with a parent who wasn't allowed to have pets growing up which meant, I was a great benefactor of a situation in which I grew up with a lot of pets. Many rescues....I remember as a child spending a lot of time taking care of a wide variety of animals. horses, dogs, cats, a few fish, a goat, a family of hamsters, finches and parakeets. I learned so much about people as well as them.  I have a lot of love to give and I'm great with pets...I love taking care of cats now.

Hi there, my name is Bryan and I'm pro-choice, I appreciate Cat people and Dog people alike! I've had many dogs and cats growing up in Westchester so I've always had an interest in caring for animals. I had also worked at a doggy daycare in Brooklyn Heights and loved the interaction between each dog and their owner, but I went home to my (2) Tabby cats at the end of each day.

I currently work for myself as a Marketing Consultant which often means popping into a clients office for a meeting, working in a shared space, or getting things done in the comfort of my Greenpoint apartment. I currently have no pets, I'm centrally located to drive/train from other parts of the city, and I welcome your fuzzy roommate to stay in good company while you're away. Please let me know of any specific requests and I'll be happy to figure something out for you!

Remembering a White Cat

For Cory, Oscar and Jose

A white cat is your breath on a cold day.
A white cat is a tusk polished by ice,
while a continent freezes over.
A white cat is an avalanche in the Alps,
and the clouds below your jet.
A white cat watches.
A white cat waits.
A white cat is a flash in the forest
and a streak across your life.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats.

Jessica misses having a cat of her own. Until then, she's happy to welcome your furry friend and take care of her/him until you return. Her sun filled three bedroom apartment offers plenty of space to lounge and enjoy for your cat/s.

I bring a lot of experience to the position of cat-sitter, having lived and/or worked with cats practically my entire life. I grew up on a farm upstate, where we always had multiple cats running around, though we eventually settled down to a respectable 3, and I loved every one of them! My first job when I moved to the city in 2009 was working at an animal hospital, where we also adopted cats out. The cats were allowed the run of the place, and they all had very distinct personalities. I have dealt with finicky, stand-offish cats, attack-kitties, and scaredy-cats, as well as all levels of loving, sweet, and gentle cats. I naturally adopted one of the cats while I was working there, Tubs, and enjoyed his unending love of snuggles for the past 9 years, until he passed away in the spring. If your cat is struggling with any health issues, my experience also includes giving medication, such as pilling and shots.
I live in a light-filled 3-bedroom apartment with two wonderful female roommates in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. I’m not ready to move on to adopting a new cat of my own, but I love having one or more cats around.  I’m happy to keep you updated on how your cat(s) are doing, with regular pictures and texts and/or calls, and I will be happy to give your kitty all the love and/or space they need while you are away!
If you're looking for a loving temporary home for your cat/s and live in Clinton Hill, Bedford-Stuyvesant or Prospect Heights in Brooklyn we recommend you visit and meet Jessica. Contact us and send more details about your cat/s and the service you need.

They have an established kitty zone in the main room, which they hope to eventually turn into a cat palace with scratching posts and toys.

Denise provides in-home boarding services in Jackson Heights, Queens

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats

Hi, my name is Denise. Growing up all my life in NYC, animals have always been a constant. My house was always filled with, cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, fish, and kitties who seem to make a home in our backyard. One of which gave birth to a litter I cared for as well. My very first cat was an orange tabby who was best friend, and we grew up together until I finished college. Since having her I realized how amazing cats can be, she taught me unconditional love and I’ve since passed that along to some new furry friends of my own. I have since rescued all of my cats from the street starting with my big boy Mellow, who passed from cancer, he was my dogcat and loved to play fetch. To my last two babies Cali and Pepper who lived until 15 and 16 years of age, and passed this summer. Not having them around has left a huge void in my life and my heart. I know at this moment I can’t bear to start my journey again with a new friend, but being a cat boarder helps ease that void a bit, and I can give comfort, security and love to your kitties while you’re away and ease any of your concerns

I’ve had three cats at one time and have also cared for kittens and sat for friends and family. I’m capable at giving pill or liquid medication and having worked with many animals throughout my life, I learned early on patience is key. Professionally I work as a production coordinator for Hair Club, which keeps me organized, responsible and constantly having to communicate through emails all day long.  So, keeping up to date with emails, pictures, and texts of your pet will come naturally to me and you’ll never have to wonder how they are doing. I happily invite you to leave your kitty with me and enjoy your time away knowing they are being loved and well taken care of by a fellow cat lover.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

I've had cats from the moment I was able to ask for one when I was little, who I promptly named Socks, because of her cute, dainty, little, white dipped feet. Socks was my best friend for 21 years, and over my life I've been lucky to have called Jasmine, Tubba, and Kitty my best friends as well. I've also come to befriend so many other wonderful furry souls since I began petsitting nearly nonstop 3.5 years ago. I have a lovely apartment in the center of Chelsea, where your feline friend will enjoy basking in the sunlit rooms, or sitting next to me while we Netflix and chill.
I'm a former full-time dogwalker, teacher, admissions consultant, turned Household Manager and Petsitter. What does that mean for you and your cat? Most importantly it means that much of the work day, I work from home, so I can spend a lot of time with your baby. Yay! As a Household Manager (I work for a family and help them manage their homes, travels, staff, etc), I am a highly organized person who enjoys a clean aesthetic, so you'll find my home is always plenty clean and safe for your best friend. You'll receive prompt responses that are articulate and full of silly photos of your friend :)
If you need a temporary home for your cat/s Jennifer can provide the perfect environment until you return. Her apartment in Chelsea is full of light and Jennifer works from home so your pet will not spend long periods on her/his own. Contact us and send more details about the service you need. We'll be glad to help you.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Hi, my name is Ashey! I'm a great cat boarder because I've grown up with two cats and recently took care of a litter of 5 kittens when I lived in New Jersey! This means I am familiar with multiple cat personality types and this will come in handy because as we all know - not every cat is the same! I will care for your cat just as if it were my own. Since I moved to the Lincoln Center neighborhood in Manhattan, I have space for a new cat and love caring for one. Professionally, I am an executive assistant and I work from home, so expect your cat to have my full care and attention! I'm very responsible, respectful and look forward to meeting you and your little one!

I'm a professional singer, playwright, and actress. I enjoy exercise and healthy living. I love animals, Rockaway Beach, and meeting new people. Looking forward to caring for your cat(s)!

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

I've lived in NYC for 6 years--four of those spent with a beautiful black cat named Frida, and two were spent with two additional cats named Zorro and Mochi. Through living with these delightful fur balls, I gained a lot of experience in administering meds (one was diabetic) and learning the subtle purrs of contented kitties. Since my roommate moved away, I'm without a cat of my own, so I'm delighted to open my home to kitties that need a homey place to lodge for a while.
I'm an actor and freelancer in the city, with a passion for art and animals. When not in rehearsals, I often work from home, so can be available for plenty of quality time with your cat.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Barry lives on his own in a studio located at 666 West End Ave (92nd St) in Manhattan. He loves animals and enjoys taking care of cats.

I'm a writer and editor who lives in a studio on the Upper West Side (90s/West End Ave.). I hail from Massachusetts but have lived in New York City for 30 years. I've boarded cats for several years now, and if you live within a radius of a few blocks and would rather have me visit your apartment to attend to your cat (I did that once), that's fine. I've taken care of several cats over the past few years (I wish I had a photo of Dexter!), and the cat you see accompanying my photo is one of my favorites, Eh-Gee (Korean name/Korean owners). Look at the face!
