Holiday Safety Tips for Cats: How to Keep Your Kitty Safe This Christmas

12/11/2025

The holidays can be a joyful time for humans, but for cats they often mean noise, crowds, unfamiliar smells, and hidden dangers around the house. Whether you’re hosting guests or traveling, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your cat calm, safe, and healthy during Christmas and New Year’s.
Here are our essential holiday safety tips for cats.

1. Create a Safe Room if You’re Hosting Guests
If you’re having people over, especially loud or unfamiliar guests, consider setting up a quiet room just for your cat.

A safe room should include:
  • Food and fresh water
  • A clean litter box
  • A cozy bed or hiding spot
  • Familiar blankets or items with their scent
This helps reduce stress and prevents accidental escapes when doors are opening constantly.

2. Be Careful with Candles, Fireplaces, and Decorations
Open flames are one of the biggest holiday hazards.
  • Never leave lit candles unattended
  • Keep cats away from fireplaces and hot radiators
  • Avoid dangling decorations that can be pulled down
Cats are curious by nature, and one jump can cause burns or accidents.

3. Watch Out for Ribbons, Tinsel, and Gift Wrapping
Many festive items look like toys but are dangerous if swallowed.
Avoid leaving around:
  • Ribbons, string, bows, and tinsel
  • Plastic wrap and packaging materials
Ingesting these can cause serious intestinal blockages that require emergency surgery.
Picture
4. Do NOT Feed Cats Human Holiday Food
It’s tempting to share, but many holiday foods are toxic to cats.
Never give cats:
  • Onions, garlic, chives
  • Chocolate, sweets, or anything with sugar or xylitol
  • Alcohol
  • Fatty foods (turkey skin, gravy, butter)
Stick to your cat’s regular diet to avoid stomach upset or worse.

5. Christmas Trees and Plants: Proceed with Caution
If you have a Christmas tree:
  • Secure it so it can’t tip over
  • Avoid tinsel entirely
  • Cover the tree water (it may contain fertilizers or bacteria)
Be especially careful with toxic plants, including:
  • Lilies (extremely dangerous for cats)
  • Poinsettias
  • Mistletoe
When in doubt, keep plants out of reach or skip them altogether.

6. Fireworks and Loud Noises
Fireworks, loud music, and sudden noises can be terrifying for cats.
  • Keep windows and doors closed
  • Play soft background music to mask loud sounds
  • Make sure your cat is safely indoors during New Year’s celebrations
Never bring cats to fireworks displays.

7. Traveling for the Holidays?
If you’re traveling, cats usually do best staying in their familiar environment.
A professional cat sitter or in-home boarding caregiver can:
  • Maintain your cat’s routine
  • Reduce stress
  • Provide updates and peace of mind
At Kitty in NY, we carefully match each cat with a caregiver who understands their personality and needs, even during the busiest holiday season.

A Calm Holiday Is the Best Gift
Cats don’t need decorations, parties, or presents.
They need consistency, safety, and calm.
With a little planning, you can enjoy the holidays knowing your kitty is comfortable and well cared for.

Need holiday care for your cat?
Contact Kitty in NY and tell us about your cat and your travel plans. We’ll help you find the best caregiver available in your area.

Holiday Travel in NYC: Sitting Visits or Home Boarding? How to Choose the Best Cat Care for Christmas

12/4/2025

Christmas season is one of the busiest times of the year for cat caregivers at Kitty in NY.

When you travel during the holidays, there are two main options to consider for your cat:
  • Sitting visits at your home (quick, simple, familiar space)
  • In-home boarding in the caregiver’s home (longer stays, stable company)
Both are great, but the best choice depends on your cat’s personality, routine needs, and trip duration.

Sitting Visits: Best for Cats Who Love Their Territory

If your cat enjoys its home more than people (aka most cats), sitting visits are ideal. A caregiver stops by to:
  • Feed, refresh water, clean the litter box
  • Offer playtime or quiet company
  • Keep daily routine intact without changing environments
This option works beautifully for:
  • Independent cats
  • Cats that don’t like strangers
  • Those traveling 2–6 days
Cats are usually happier where they feel they own the universe.
Picture

Home Boarding: Best for Social or Sensitive Cats

In-home boarding means your cat stays at a caregiver’s home. This option offers:
  • Continuous attention and companionship
  • Less stress for cats that feel lonely when humans vanish
  • A safe, structured environment for longer trips
This is the best fit for:
  • Affectionate cats or emotional homebodies
  • Cats requiring medication, shots, or special care routines
  • Those traveling over 7 days

If you're traveling during Christmas and still unsure what your cat might prefer, we’re always happy to help you choose: just contact our team, and we’ll handle the details so your cat enjoys the holidays safely and comfortably.

Meet Gloria, offering home cat boarding in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan

12/4/2025

At Kitty in NY, we handpick caregivers who genuinely love cats, and Gloria is a perfect example of that spirit. “I have always had a love for cats. Their beauty, diversity and personality difference is apparent to each individual cat, no matter the breed. Their aloofness and independence are what I love the most, though some can be wonderfully affectionate as well.”

Gloria worked with Kitty in NY for several years as an in-home boarder before Covid-19. Over that time, she built strong trust with clients, many of whom traveled regularly during the holidays, summer months, and long seasonal trips. One of her most loyal returning clients spent every summer in Europe, leaving their beloved cat in her care for multiple years, often for several months at a time. “They trusted me with their precious pet for several months, year after year. I had many returning clients, especially owners who traveled regularly for the holidays.”

Caring for cats in a home environment offers something unique : comfort, calm, familiar routines, and personal attention. For Gloria, in-home boarding has always been an alternative she admires and enjoys facilitating. “Being an in-home boarder gives me the opportunity to offer cat owners a safe, loving option in my home, where their cats can enjoy the same freedom they would have at their own home.”
Picture
Gloria also recognizes the value of working alongside our agency to make long-term plans smooth and stress-free. “I appreciate having Kitty in NY intercede any issues or changes with the contract. It’s important to have an agency as an intermediary: especially when clients need flexibility or extended stays.”

If you're looking for a boarding service in Manhattan (NYC) with personalized, home-based attention, Gloria is ready to welcome your cat into her cozy, cat-friendly space.

Home boarding offers a stable routine, low stress, safe space, and the emotional comfort that only a home environment can provide. At Kitty in NY, all caregivers follow clearly established guidelines and communication protocols to ensure that every cat stay is safe, structured and filled with individual love and attention.

If this feels like the right choice for your cat, we’re happy to guide you through the next steps and ensure a seamless boarding experience.

We’re pleased to introduce Gwen, a highly experienced cat sitter offering in-home visits on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Originally from Ireland, Gwen has lived in the UES since the early 1990s. Before transitioning into pet care, she worked in corporate aviation as a flight attendant and crew supervisor—roles that required calm judgment, strong communication, and exceptional attention to safety and comfort. She brings those same qualities to every cat she cares for.

Experienced, reliable, and medically confident

Gwen has cared for cats her entire life and has extensive experience with:
  • Senior cats
  • Cats requiring daily medications
  • Cats with complex or chronic medical needs
Her approach is patient, proactive, and highly attentive, offering the kind of careful monitoring that gives cat owners true peace of mind.

She is available for daily cat sitting visits throughout the Upper East Side.
If you’re traveling and need someone dependable to care for your feline family member, Gwen may be the perfect match.

What Cats Teach Us About Living Together

11/13/2025

Sharing your home with a cat is more than having a pet—it’s an everyday lesson in respect, balance, and quiet companionship. Cats don’t demand attention; they invite connection. They remind us that love doesn’t need to be loud to be real.

1. Respecting Boundaries
Cats are masters of personal space. They come close when they feel safe, and step back when they need a break. Living with them teaches us to listen without words, to recognize moods, and to understand that affection means more when it’s given freely—not forced.

2. The Art of Independence

While dogs often mirror our routines, cats preserve their own rhythm. They nap when they please, observe us from a distance, and return when they’re ready. They remind us that it’s okay to take time for ourselves—to recharge, to watch the world go by from the window, to just be.
3. Patience and Tolerance
Cats have a quiet wisdom. They forgive our clumsiness, our noise, our schedules. They adapt, but never lose themselves. Watching a cat live is watching balance in motion—softness and strength coexisting in perfect measure.

4. Love Without Possession
The bond between cat and human is a partnership, not ownership. They teach us to love without control, to share space without domination. A cat’s affection is a privilege you earn, not something you command.

At Kitty in NY, we understand these lessons better than anyone. Whether you choose boarding in one of our trusted caregivers’ homes or prefer cat sitting visits in your own apartment, our goal is always the same: to care for your cat with respect, patience, and genuine love.

Contact us today to learn more about our services and how we can make your cat’s time away from you as peaceful and natural as possible.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Hello, I’m Jen. Originally from Pennsylvania I’ve been a New Yorker for the past 18 years. I love all animals but have a particular soft spot for cats. I currently live with 5 sweet little rescues, two of whom are blind. All of whom are so very sweet and loving. Each of these darlings have been with me since they were kittens. Lucy and Lucky are the senior citizens, 15 and 14 years old. Lucky is a funny little boy who thrives on beauty treatments with the hair dryer and is obsessed with water. Actually likes to drink out of a glass. And this silly fella jumps in the shower with me. How cute is that! I am well-schooled in giving medications as well as shots or fluids, and have been through it all with them. Every morning I wake with a cat by my head and love it. I would love to help take care of your fur babies as well.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Hello there! My name is Jomary. I am a Bronx native and first grade teacher. I love all animals big and small, especially those of the feline variety. During my free time, I enjoy hiking, running, singing, taking pictures, reading, and cooking. I previously had my grey tabby cat, Tommy, for 15 years until he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I now open my home and time to kitties in need of a caretaker when their owners are away. I love all cats; to the fluffiest, sweetest, slimmest, chonkiest, dramatic, bob-tailed, mitten-wearing, bare-skinned, and spicy ones. My home is a cozy abode with warm tones and a natural feel. I want your kitty to feel comfortable in my home just as I am. Cuddles, playtime, and one-sided conversations with occasional meows by your cat are included!

Sylvia, Your Purr-fect Cat Sitter!

Hello, fellow cat lovers! I'm Sylvia, and while my dream of adopting a feline friend is sadly thwarted by my mischievous allergies (think watery eyes and sneezes that could launch a small rocket), my love for cats is boundless. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I bring a unique blend of responsibility, responsiveness, and genuine care to every cat I meet. My extensive foster cat experience means I'm adept at understanding feline behavior and providing a safe, enriching environment for your beloved companion. Since I can only sustain life on short-term doses of cat love, I'm eager to shower your kitty with affection and ensure their well-being while you're away.

At KITTY in NY, we are proud to work with caregivers who combine skill, reliability, and genuine affection for every cat they meet. Maureen is one of those special people.

A long-time member of our team, Maureen returns to Kitty in NY after taking time off to nurse her own newly adopted cat back to health—an experience that deepened her already strong understanding of feline needs. With years of cat care experience, she is skilled at engaging with playful, chatty cats while also offering gentle comfort to senior kitties who simply crave a soft pet or a warm tummy rub.

When asked why Maureen would like to go back to Kitty in New York, she remarked:  “I love taking care of these sweetie pies and making them feel special and then sending a photo to their parents to let them know their little ones are in good hands.”
If you live on the Upper West Side and need a trusted, attentive cat sitter, Maureen could be the perfect match. Cat sitting visits are ideal for short-term care, whether for a quick trip or a few weeks away. You’ll receive photo updates after each visit, so you can enjoy peace of mind knowing your cat is happy and cared for.

Contact us with details about your cat(s) and the service you need—we’ll be happy to connect you with Maureen or another trusted caregiver.

As always, Maureen was wonderful. She takes such great care of my cats, sends me detailed updates and lots of pictures, and is very responsive to any requests that I have. I feel totally happy leaving the cats in her care. With other cat sitters, My shy cats would often hide the entire time, but with her, they always come out and say hello. Thank you, Maureen!

Maureen was attentive, thoughtful, and so very sweet to Suki! We loved all her photos and timely emails, and felt comforted by all of her knowledgeable questions when she first came to visit us and meet Suki. We would be so happy to have Maureen come take care of Suki again. She was great!

Maureen was very good from the moment I met her. I felt very comfortable leaving my two fur babies in her care. She took notes on everything I was telling her and was very attentive and asked questions. While I was away, I received Daley updates and pictures and she did an amazing job!

Maureen bonded with my cat Cooper instantly at their first meeting, so I felt confident that this would work. Maureen then provided excellent communication – before and during the trip – with quick response to emails and much appreciated daily updates and photos showing Cooper at play. Best of all, Cooper seems completely happy, healthy and well cared for. Maureen was terrific!

Tim - by email
Maureen was easy to coordinate with to set up the initial meeting. During our vacation, Maureen sent us pictures every day. When we arrived home, the cats were healthy and happy.

Dan - by email
Maureen was incredibly responsive, really knew her stuff about taking care of my cat, went over and above in terms of making sure he had food that he needed and would eat despite his just having switched over to a renal care diet. He’s also a tricky cat to bond with, but she had him purring the whole way, & kept me up to speed with photos and updates. It really put me at ease that my little guy was in good hands.

Suzanne - by email
Maureen was fantastic! She was caring and loving with our favorite boy, Leopold :-) She sent us great photos and kept us updated on all his funny shenanigans! 6 Superpowers of Cats You Didn’t Know About

10/2/2025

At Kitty in NY, we’ve always believed that cats are not just pets—they are extraordinary creatures with hidden powers that make them fascinating companions. Living with a cat means sharing your home with a little superhero disguised in fur. Today, we’ll uncover six of their most incredible “superpowers.”

1. Night Vision
Have you ever wondered how your cat manages to dash across the room in total darkness without bumping into anything? Cats’ eyes are designed to capture even the smallest amount of light, giving them superb night vision. While they can’t see in complete darkness, their vision is about six times more powerful than ours in low light.

2. Super Hearing
Your cat may seem to be napping, but don’t be fooled—those ears are always on alert. Cats can hear higher frequencies than dogs and humans, detecting even the faintest rustle of a mouse or the softest squeak of a toy. This ability comes straight from their wild ancestors, who relied on acute hearing to hunt.

3. Whisker Radar

A cat’s whiskers are far more than adorable facial features. They are highly sensitive tools that help measure spaces, detect changes in air currents, and sense nearby objects—even in the dark. Think of them as nature’s GPS system, guiding your cat safely through any environment.

4. The Balancing Tail

One of the reasons cats are so graceful is their tail. It acts as a counterbalance, helping them land on their feet, walk across narrow spaces, and make those famous acrobatic jumps. The next time you see your cat leap effortlessly, remember: it’s their tail keeping them steady.

5. Healing Purrs
Purring isn’t just a sign of happiness—it’s also believed to have healing properties. Studies suggest that the vibrations of a cat’s purr can promote relaxation, lower stress, and even support bone healing. When your cat curls up on your lap and purrs, it’s like having a built-in therapy session.

6. Incredible Agility
Cats can jump up to six times their body length in a single bound. Combined with their flexible spines and lightning reflexes, this makes them some of the most athletic creatures in the animal kingdom. Whether it’s leaping onto the top of a shelf or chasing a toy, their agility is simply unmatched.

Living with a cat means living alongside all these amazing abilities every single day. At Kitty in NY, we love celebrating what makes cats so special—and making sure they’re cared for when you can’t be there. For shorter trips, our Cat Sitting service is the ideal option: a caregiver will visit your home and provide food, playtime, and updates after each visit. If you’re leaving New York for several weeks or months, In-Home Boarding is the perfect solution—your cat stays at a caregiver’s apartment where they’ll be the only pet and receive plenty of love and attention.

Contact us today with more details about your cat and your travel dates—we’ll be happy to help you find the best care option for your feline superhero!

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!
Picture
Hello! My name is Ruxandra Iancu and I've been an animal lover my whole life. I've had dogs, cats and a bunny, who lived happily to be 8 and a half years old. I don't currently have any pets and would love the opportunity to either house a cat in my own home, for the duration of your vacations, or to stop by your place and make sure your kitty gets some quality time, play time and proper care.

If you are leaving the city for a short trip we recommend cat sitting visits. A caregiver will visit your cat in your apartment. For your longer term needs in-home boarding is the perfect solution. You bring your cat to the caregiver's apartment where she/he will be treated and their own pet. Your cat will be the only pet in the apartment. Contact us and send more details about your cat/s and the service you need, we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Ruxandra is an amazing caregiver. This was my second time working with her. The first time, she fed my cats in my home, the second time, I boarded my cats in her home. Both times, she was incredibly attentive, asked great questions, was extremely communicative and caring, and sent great photos on a regular basis. My cats are very particular and aren't used to strangers, and took to Ruxandra very quickly. She is clearly an animal whisperer and has kind, calm, energy. I would not hesitate to use her again or to recommend her. It made my trip so much less stressful knowing my kitties were in a loving, caring environment!

All I have to say is that when I went to pick my cat Milan from Erica he was better! She even was able to clean his paws which I could not do. I have to find out what her secret was lol! But I highly recommend Erica to take care of your cat baby. She’s sweet and kind. Also when I went to pick up my cat after my vacation everything was totally clean out the litter box his water fountain and his bowls. She’s the sweetest person. I’m definitely using her again when I go away. Milan loves her too.

We want to let you know that Erica provided excellent care of Persha during our trip last week. Erica closely followed our instructions, sent daily updates, and offered a safe and loving environment to our kitty. Persha was a bit reluctant to engage at first, but by the end of the week, Erica had established a warm relationship with her. We would like to recommend Erica very highly to your future clients.

We were also very pleased to work with you and KITTY in NY in placing Persha. You made the process easy and stress-free!

Thank you, John!

Great people we have met! - Laura

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

A native of Romania, I lived in Belgium for a number of years before coming to the US. I now very much enjoy life in New York City, and this is home. As a licensed Real Estate professional I often work from home, and have a flexible schedule. My one bedroom apartment, located in East Harlem (111th Street), has the space and ambience for your kitty to play. Since I have a backyard with trees your kitty can enjoy watching the birds and squirrels from the window.

Presley was 7 year old when he adopted me. He was chuck-full of personality. When I sat in a chair he’d jump in my lap. He constantly followed me around the house, slept in bed with me, and showed his discontent when I was going out. A very playful fellow he loved having his belly rubbed. He lived to be 14 years old and I miss him to this day.

My friend has a new kitty, just 6 months old. She gets very excited when I visit, jumps around and plays with everything that moves, chews on my fingers…ah, so adorable.

Laura LOVES cats and took really good care of our cat Obi. She didn't simply feed him, change his water and cleaned his litter. We were away for 2 weeks and Laura sent us daily updates with pics and videos of Obi playing with her, or doing the cat's thing; hanging out oblivious to human presence:) He obviously was in good hands. Laura understood Obi's routine immediately and went along with it . First eat, then play, then hang out, then little trip to the kitchen to check if by any miracle there was more food:) I highly recommend Laura. She will take good care of your furry friend.
