Cats: Independent, Yes—But Far from Aloof

5/1/2025

Cats often get labeled as solitary or aloof, but that reputation doesn’t tell the full story. In reality, many cats thrive on companionship and enjoy meaningful interactions with their humans. They can even sense when you’re feeling down—curling up beside you or simply being present in a way that’s both comforting and calming. A cat’s presence can lift your mood and provide quiet support during tough times.

But emotional insight isn’t the only reason cats make amazing companions. They’re also incredibly easy to care for:

Why Cats Make Great Housemates

  • Litter training takes about a minute: Place a clean litter box in a quiet corner of your home and voilà—your feline friend is ready to go. No long housebreaking process needed.
  • They’re naturally clean: Healthy cats groom themselves meticulously. You won’t have to worry about dirty paws on the couch or funky odors clinging to your rugs. Your feline roommate will stay spotless from head to tail.
  • No guilt trips: Unlike dogs, cats won’t give you a sad look when you're busy. If you can’t play right away, your kitty will quietly find a cozy spot and nap without complaint.
  • They’re built-in heaters: Especially in winter, there’s nothing better than a warm, purring cat curled up in your lap. Cozy, quiet, and better than a blanket.

Ready to Add a Cat to Your Life?

If you're thinking about welcoming a feline into your home, consider adopting from a local shelter or rescue. You’ll be giving a cat a second chance—and gaining a loving companion in return.

How Many Teeth Do Cats Have? What You Need To Know

4/10/2025

This article belongs to Tinpaw.com. Kitty in NY was kindly asked by the founder Diana Hutchinson to share its content in our blog: http://tinpaw.com/how-many-teeth-does-a-cat-have/

Teeth are considered as an important feature of your cat’s life. Not only it is to catch their prey, but it serves many functions like grooming and taking care of their litters. As it has many aspects, have you stopped and wondered how many teeth do cats have?
It seems like it’s only now that cat owners had started to give attention to dental care in cats especially when the internet exploded the news that it loves cat videos and memes. But one has to know that dental awareness and hygiene in cats can have a huge effect on the tooth and other organs of the cat’s body also.
Here, we’ll show you through all features of a cat’s tooth – from how many teeth do cats have to tips on taking care of your feline’s teeth.

Picture
How many teeth do cats have?
Do kittens have teeth when they are born?
Kittens are born without teeth, but after their birth, they start developing the deciduous teeth which are also called baby or milk teeth. The teething is followed by incisors, canines, and premolars when they grow older. But kittens don’t get to develop molars just yet. See a little timeline below.
Baby teeth
  • Two weeks: At two weeks of a kitten’s birth, the deciduous incisors start coming out of the gums.
  • Three to four weeks: Within three to four weeks, the canines also start appearing.
  • Four to six weeks: Four to six weeks later, the premolars on the lower jaw usually start appearing.
  • Eight weeks: Your kitten will have all of the deciduous teeth after eight weeks has passed from its birth.
  • Three to four months: The kittens usually have their permanent incisors when they are three and a half to four months old.
  • Five months: When your cat reaches five months, its four canines should pop out.
  • Six months: Six months, the ten premolars have grown.
How many teeth do cats have? The deciduous teeth are 26 in total number having twelve incisors three on upper while three on lower jaw in each side, four canines one on upper and one on lower jaw on the each side, six upper premolars and four lower premolars.
When your kitten is teething, the pain will bother your little feline friend. Its gums will become sore, and your pet will be restless and uncomfortable.
Things to do during kitten’s teething period
  • Provide it with soft food like low carb cat food or kibble in small pieces as they do not require to be chewed forcefully.
  • Provide the cats with soft chews and toys. The chews are available to a great variety like nylon and rubber. Make sure it's non-toxic. Don’t play with toys quite strongly with your kitten.
  • You can place your chewers inside the fridge for it to become a bit cold. It can bring comfort to the sore gums and erupting teeth when your kitten plays with it.
  • There can be a problem in bringing out the teeth like misalignment, crowding, and intense pain. Visit the vet to make sure your cat’s teeth are aligned.
  • Avoid brushing your kitten’s teeth during this phase.
How many adult teeth cats have?
Remember one thing: when a cat undergoes teething for the deciduous teeth, it conceives only 26 teeth. When your cat reaches its adult stage, its permanent teeth will develop a complete set of 30 teeth.
Do cats suffer gum problems?
Tooth cavities and swollen gums can also happen to your cat. Main symptoms like bad breath or excessive drooling can, in fact, link to another disease to the heart, kidneys or more. Your cat’s dental problems can start showing signs during your kitty’s third year.
Sadly, most cat owners only notice it when their pets start losing a tooth. How many teeth do cats have won’t matter anymore when they start to fall off. Some clues that will tell you that your cat is having problems include:
  • Drooling
  • Bad breath
  • Loss of appetite
  • Quickly gets hurt when touched around the mouth area
  • Eats food a bit differently
  • Loss of tooth
When that happens, your cat might be suffering one of the following diseases:
  • Stomatitis or inflammation of the mouth
  • Plaque and tooth decay
  • Inflammation of the pulp or the gums
Fact: Did you know that some cats are in need of braces? Just like humans, a misalignment in their teeth could lead to lockjaw or open mouth jaw locking. Severe cases can have their mouth operated.
Picture
Teeth care for the cats
Cats may not enjoy you cleaning their mouth, but they need it. Dental problems are one of the things vets can find in cats whenever an owner brings them to an animal hospital.
  • Provide it with an intensive care to keep its translucent teeth healthy.
  • Use treats and foods that protect against developing the tartar and plaque.
  • Brush the teeth of your pet regularly otherwise; it may give out a bad odor whenever it opens its mouth. Use a soft brush.
  • Let your pet eat only low carb cat food.
  • Give it soft toys.
  • Regular visits to the vet.
You treat your cat’s teeth like how you treat yours – a brush, treatment, and a change in eating habits. If you remember how many teeth do cats have, we say, once it’s permanent, it’s permanent. Once your kitty loses a tooth, it won’t grow back.
You don’t want your cat to suffer in silence, do you? Show your pet some love as they have done for you! And if we missed on anything, just let us know in the comments.

Burmese Cats: Everything You Need to Know

2/17/2025

Burmese cats are a charming, affectionate breed that has won hearts around the world. Known for their striking appearance and playful temperament, these cats make wonderful companions. In this blog article, we’ll explore the physical description, origins, daily care, and common health concerns specific to the Burmese breed.

Burmese cats are medium-sized, muscular felines with a compact and sturdy build. They have a distinctive, shiny short coat that comes in a range of colors—from the classic sable (rich, dark brown) to blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream. One of their most captivating features is their large, expressive eyes, which are typically gold or green. Their rounded head, short muzzle, and sleek body combine to give them an elegant yet robust appearance that exudes both warmth and vitality.

The Burmese breed traces its roots to Southeast Asia, though it was refined and popularized in the United States during the 1930s. The foundation of the modern Burmese cat is often credited to a cat named Wong Mau, brought from Burma (now Myanmar). Breeders in the U.S. were captivated by her striking appearance and friendly demeanor, and through selective breeding—often involving Siamese cats—developed the breed we recognize today. This careful breeding helped create a cat known not only for its beautiful looks but also for its affectionate and people-oriented nature.

Burmese cats are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming due to their short, glossy coat. A weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove loose hairs and keep their coat looking its best. Because they are active and social, it’s important to provide them with plenty of interactive play and mental stimulation. Regular play sessions, puzzle feeders, and climbing structures can help keep them physically and mentally healthy. In addition, ensuring they have access to fresh water, a balanced diet, and routine vet check-ups will contribute to their overall well-being.
Picture
Overall, Burmese cats are a generally healthy breed with a long lifespan, often reaching 16 years or more. However, like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues:
  • Diabetes Mellitus: Due to their love of food and potential for weight gain, Burmese cats can be at risk for diabetes if overfed or under-exercised. Maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and regular activity is key.
  • Obesity: Their sociable nature and appetite make it important to monitor their food intake and ensure they get enough exercise.
  • Dental Issues: Regular dental care, including brushing their teeth and routine vet dental check-ups, can prevent periodontal problems common in many cats.
  • Hereditary Conditions: While less common, it’s important to choose a reputable breeder who screens for genetic disorders, ensuring a healthy start for your Burmese companion.
Regular veterinary check-ups are essential to catch any potential issues early and to keep your cat in optimal health.

The Burmese cat breed offers a delightful blend of beauty, personality, and resilience. Their affectionate nature, striking appearance, and relatively easy-going care requirements make them an excellent choice for many families. By staying mindful of their dietary needs, maintaining an active lifestyle, and scheduling regular veterinary visits, you can help ensure that your Burmese cat leads a long, healthy, and happy life.

Whether you’re a longtime cat lover or considering your first pet, the Burmese cat is a breed that promises both companionship and endless charm.

What is In-Home Cat Boarding?

2/13/2025

In-home cat boarding is a convenient service that allows cat owners to find a temporary home for their furry friends while they’re away. Instead of traditional boarding facilities, your cat receives personalized, 24-hour care in a warm, home-like environment provided by dedicated cat lovers—all at an affordable rate. At Kitty in NY, we carefully select the top caregivers across the city to ensure your pet is treated like family. Plus, we encourage our clients to leave reviews and feedback after each service, helping us continually maintain the highest quality of care.

We visit and meet the caregivers to ensure they are qualified to watch your cat. When the best option for your cat is confirmed you may meet and visit the perspective caregiver. The in-home cat boarding service provides a no cost, no obligation meet and greet for the client and potential caregiver to see if it will be a good fit.

In-home cat boarding services offer cats individual attention, your cat/s would be the only pets in the apartment. They can also keep up with your pet’s regular routine — including eating schedules, grooming necessities, and daily playtime requirements — so your cat has less anxiety while you’re away.

While price is certainly a consideration, how your cat will be cared for while you’re away is paramount. We believe we provide the best solution for our clients in New York City. Our caregivers enjoy having a cat for a few days (or a few months). This would be the only solution for a long term boarding. You can now take a long break, pursue a carreer opportunity overseas for a few months or visit family and friends for long periods of time. Your cat will be in good hands and you will receive periodic updates during the boarding.

Kitty in NY isn’t just about connecting owners and caregivers but also ensuring quality through caregiver reference checks, reviews, personal interviews, online training and follow up during the boarding:
  1. Is the caregiver’s home clean and safe? Before you head out to tour Europe, head over to the caregiver's apartment that you’re considering to confirm your cat will be placed in a cat friendly, secure home. The meet and greet is free, it is the best way to ensure the caregiver we selected is your best match. We can propose several caregivers until you find your match.
  2. Are the caregivers responsible and reliable? We meet and interview all our caregivers. They have been cat owners that for different reasons do not own a cat at the moment. They have the experience of taking care of a cat and enjoy cat company.
  3. Our caregivers have no pets of their own, your cat will be the only pet in the apartment. This helps reduce the stress of your cat and the time to get adjusted to the new environment.
  4. What’s the daily routine of your cat? If your cat needs his pill at a certain time of day, or likes to play with you before dinner time, be sure that the in-home boarding care will be accommodating following your cat's routine. Consider feeding, medication, physical needs and hygienic needs. All those details will be included in the contract.
  5. Provide full disclosure. In addition to interviewing the in-home cat caregiver, providing an out-of-town contact number, it’s a cat parent’s job to be open and transparent about a cat’s needs. Share as much info about your cat’s personality, needs and medical history as possible to ensure your pet has a fabulous time on his vacation!
Kitty in NY is the best in-home cat boarding solution in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. We will be glad to help you with your cat/s!

I picked up Bonnie on April 22, 2024 from Anna Lokken. Anna did a fantastic job caring for Bonnie during the two months he was with her. He put on a little weight, which is good because he was a little scrawny looking when I dropped him off in February, and is coat is shiny and silken instead of flat and dull as it was in February. Anna kept me updated on Bonnie’s well-being and sent photos which his owner thoroughly enjoyed.

I highly recommend Anna to anyone in search of a caring and thoughtful cat sitter. An example of Anna’s care was immediate the day I brought Bonnie to her apartment. He yowled all the way from his home on West 86th Street and was quite agitated when he arrived at Anna's. To soothe him, she played calming music and within minutes he quieted down.

Thank you for your help finding a great temporary home for Bonnie—and at such short notice. I will gladly refer anyone looking for a cat sitter to your agency.

She was easy to reach and communicate with, and her apartment was clean and easy to access for drop off/pick up. Our cat seemed to be healthy and happy when we returned from our trip - he’s seemed stressed after some other hosts so I appreciate her and her family keeping him happy. She had everything packed and ready to go on pickup day making this a simple process. My only (minor) suggestion would have been to receive a couple of photos/updates via email with how things were going during the stay rather than just near the end - other caregivers we’ve used have done this every 2-3 days and it’s appreciated.

Remembering a White Cat

For Cory, Oscar and Jose

A white cat is your breath on a cold day.
A white cat is a tusk polished by ice,
while a continent freezes over.
A white cat is an avalanche in the Alps,
and the clouds below your jet.
A white cat watches.
A white cat waits.
A white cat is a flash in the forest
and a streak across your life.

I could tell that my cat was comfortable and well taken care of. I am very happy with Roland's service and would highly recommend him to anyone looking to board their cat.

Roland took care of our cat Chessy really well. When we had dropped her off with Roland, he sent pictures of her settling down and making her way around in his home - hiding, coming out and exploring, eating food, using her litter box. The pictures made us relieved that she was doing ok. Roland also made sure he sent regulars updates/ pictures. He also allowed our cat to treat his home like her own home.

Additionally, Roland was very flexible with us regarding the pick up and drop off time. Our return flight was delayed by 2 hours and Roland was flexible with the pick up time being delayed by us.

Roland and his girlfriend (I’m so sorry I don’t have her name) cared so well for Benji! I was nervous leaving him for two weeks, but Roland made it very easy, answered my questions, and were open to a meet and greet prior. They sent me daily updates, and I could tell Benji was well taken care of. They were easy to communicate and work with, I plan to request them again when I need someone to watch Benji. Thank you!

Roland was so nice! He clearly made an effort to get to know Diesel and was so considerate of his needs. He is a mischievous young cat and Roland went with it, no problems. He sent pictures and videos every day of our cat clearly loved and enjoying his new setting. They played with him and he probably didn't want to come back home! There weren't many reviews on boarding so I hope this helps someone!

Roland is very punctual and responsible. He sends videos and pics of my kitties on every visit. My kitties are in good mood around him. He is very compassionate and connects with them very well. I see very active interaction such as playing with them and cuddling them. Routine service such as feeding and changing litter box are also taken care of in timely manner. I was very worried since this is the first time I’m away from my kitties for so long. But Roland’s service has assured me that my kitties are in good hands. I will highly recommend him to anyone who needs care for their beloved kittens.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Barry lives on his own in a studio located at 666 West End Ave (92nd St) in Manhattan. He loves animals and enjoys taking care of cats.

I'm a writer and editor who lives in a studio on the Upper West Side (90s/West End Ave.). I hail from Massachusetts but have lived in New York City for 30 years. I've boarded cats for several years now, and if you live within a radius of a few blocks and would rather have me visit your apartment to attend to your cat (I did that once), that's fine. I've taken care of several cats over the past few years (I wish I had a photo of Dexter!), and the cat you see accompanying my photo is one of my favorites, Eh-Gee (Korean name/Korean owners). Look at the face!

If you live close to the UWS in Manhattan Barry could provide a nice temporary home for your cat. He could also visit your cat/s in your apartment, cat sitting visits are recommended for short term services. Contact us and send more details about your cat and the service you need. We'll be glad to help you.

I really like all kinds of animals, but I remember thinking even as a child that cats were especially endearing. I've had six cats of my own, including the gray tabby I have now, and I have cared for many more. I've given a lot of pills to cats, and I once had a diabetic cat that I gave shots to every day (and she recovered!), so I am comfortable with those situations. I live in the West Village, work from home as an editor and have an art studio in Brooklyn. My schedule is flexible, though mornings and evenings are when I'm most available to visit kitty clients. One of the great pleasures of cat sitting is that you have the opportunity to experience the incredible individuality of cats, who have personalities as varied as those of people.

Christmas eve

12/13/2024

Matt happened to be a young guy, on his late 30’s. He limped a little bit, as if he had had an accident and was still recovering. One of his eyes was slightly closed (as if he was always winking an eye). His tone was very soft and soothing. He was going away for the holidays, visiting his girlfriend’s family in Paris. That is why they couldn't take their cat Sisi with them. Sisi and Matt had a common trait: their striking blue eyes.

Sisi was an inquisitive and talkative Siamese. Her constant low tone meowing accompanied her all day long, as if she was holding a conversation with herself. She was athletic and thin. I soon found her sleeping on top of the fridge or high on the kitchen cabinets. She ignored me all day. We inhabited the same space but in parallel dimensions.

Anyway, we were destined to share that Christmas season. It was not a sad or melancholic period. After my childhood I never cared for Christmas. The brotherly love and cheer of the season did not correspond to what I saw around me every day. I wasn’t into Christmas shopping and decorations. When I was a young woman I was convinced no dress or make up would help me look better, I thought my body was hideous. This yearly invasion of red, green and snow marked the beginning of long winter. On Christmas eve, Sisi had a can of Fancy Feast (flaked grilled salmon) and I heated a can of Campbell Chicken Soup. It was a quiet Christmas eve, just the two of us. Mrs Pearl and Sisi, my siamese kitty guest.. After having dinner we both moved in silence to the living room were Sisi took a nap and I watched cheap Christmas flicks on channel 31. Merry Christmas!

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

For over 40 years I have had the wonderful experience of having my loving kitties. I recently had to put my last kitty (Cookie) to sleep, which was extremely detrimental to me as I had her from 4 months to 19 years of age. At this juncture of my life, which includes retirement from The Board of Education of New York,  I would just like to care for other people’s cats since I can’t handle the heartbreak again.

Marie was very friendly and professional. I even accidentally locked her out, and she informed me immediately and worked with me to get access to my apartment so that she could take care of Oliver (oops!). I told Marie that she didn't need to scoop the litter daily really, but Marie did because she clearly cared about how Oliver was doing! She sent me very cute videos and clearly took care of my old guy. And she even brought up the dry cleaning the doorman handed her (!! definitely not intended). Couldn't recommend Marie more, she's fantastic :)

I grew up with dogs, cats, birds, fishes, my dad always had chickens and different animals he would foster so I’ve been an animal lover my entire life. I had a black cat named Dreamy who died a few yrs ago. I loved him so much and this would be a great opportunity for me to help you the owners with your babies. I am very caring, loving and fun. I love nurturing and caring for animals. I am a very outgoing person, super friendly and patient and I'm always looking for fun ways to entertain them. My apartment is cat friendly, extremely spacious and safe, I look forward to caring for your fur babies for as long as you need me!
