Diabetic Cats

1/30/2018

I should start by pointing this out. The exact cause of diabetes in cats is not known. However, scientists and professionals see a connection between a cat being obese and overweight and it being diabetic. Overweight and obese cats are highly susceptible to developing diabetes. This is probably being overweight makes your cat increasingly less sensitive to the effects of insulin.

Additionally, you should note that adult and older cats are more inclined to develop diabetes, as they also are prone to being overweight courtesy of their inactive tendencies.

That said, once I owned a cat that was diagnosed with diabetes (it is now no more, passed on of old age). I can still remember my shock and fear when I heard the news. The same is true for every cat parent. Diabetes symptoms include increased urination, lethargy, increased thirst as well as a loss of appetite. You cat will urinate urine that is sticky since it contains lots of sugars excreted from its body. If you do not treat the condition, it may lead to your cat’s death. But with treatment, your cat can lead a long, healthy and happy life like a normal cat. Following the diabetes diagnosis by a professional, you might have to give our cat regular shots of insulin as well as feed your cat on the best diabetes diet for cats to help manage the

Feeding Diabetic Cats
At this point, seeing that you are a caring parent eager to learn everything there is about your cat and the right feeding habits, you know that cats need animal meat in their diet. They require more meat than dogs do as they are not great in breaking down starch and carbs as dogs can. The case is even worse in diabetic cats.

The body of a diabetic cat faces a lot of difficulty in digesting and absorbing the sugar and glucose into the cells. Glucose as such builds up in the bloodstream to harmful levels. It only, therefore, makes sense to feed your cat on a diet with less starch to avoid straining your cat's body.

Research conducted shows that diabetic cats benefit greatly from diets rich in protein as well as fats but low in carbs. Kitten foods are great for this as they are rich in protein. In addition to kitten food, some professional vets may proceed to prescribe starch blockers like acarbose, which prevents the digestion of starch. This drug is, however, acquired only through a vet's prescription.

If you are keen on following a strict low carb/high protein diet for your cat living with diabetes, you should also consider canned cat food.  These are designed to be low in carbs and high in protein in comparison to dry cat food.

Alternate Diet For Diabetic Cats
Aside from low carb and high protein diet, there is yet another diet perfect for diabetic cats. This is the high fiber diet. Cat foods that are high in fiber tend to slow the absorption as well as metabolizing of fat and glucose. This is to mean that on a high fiber diet, your cat will not have a high glycemic right after eating. A high fiber diet is also best to feed to overweight and obese cats. Your cat will have a feeling of being full  for a longer period thus leading to reduced calorie intake. How does a high fiber diet achieve this? Well, for starters, it contains complex carb, which a cat's body tends to break down slowly. The slow digestion causes a reduced spike in glucose levels and the feeling of satisfaction for longer.

But before you jump on the high fiber bandwagon, you should note that the diet has a downside as well. One of which is that your cat may produce flatulence. Also, your cat's stool will increase, and the bowel movements will increase. For this reason, while a high fiber diet is an option, most cat parents, I included, prefer a high protein and low carb diet.

Changing Your Cat’s Diet
It is imperative that you work real close with your cat’s vet. The type of insulin shot will get, the dosage as well as how often the insulin shots will be will be determined by your vet being directed by the blood glucose levels your cat experiences courtesy of the diet it is on. A change in the diet means a change in glucose levels, and as such, your vet will need to make adjustments to the insulin dosage given to your cat.

Weight
Many cats living with diabetes tend to be overweight. A little weight loss could go a long way to making the issue a little better. But I should also point out that some diabetic cats are underweight. But this often occurs when your cat has suffered from diabetes and has gone untreated. Whichever the case, (overweight or underweight), you will need to get your cat's condition treated.

It is also important that I point this out. Diabetic cats still have caloric needs like normal healthy cats do, as such, while you are reducing the calorie intake for your obese or overweight cat by 25%, it is important not to allow the weight loss to go beyond 3% of its body weight every week. At first glance, I thought this was a small decrease, but when you consider the overall small weight of your cat, the margins are suddenly not so small.

Starving your cat can lead to another condition referred to as hepatic lipidosis. This is a condition in which fat collects around the liver, and it stops functioning normally. Aim for a steady loss rather than a drastic weight loss.

Factors to consider when choosing the best diabetic cat food

Below are some choosing tips that will come in handy when choosing the best diabetic cat food for your beloved feline.

Consider the animal content
Before you purchase any cat food, the first thing you should do is check on its labeling for the animal protein it contains. Cats are carnivorous. Their main source of nutrients is animal protein. Sure they may feed on watermelons, potatoes or popcorns once in a while, but their main nutrient source (what their bodies were designed to digest best), is an animal protein including chicken, fish, turkey, and beef. If the food has lots of vegetables and carbs, then it is not great for your diabetic cat.

Avoid Grains in the food
Cats may have an easier time digesting grains in comparison to carbs. However, it is important to note that while grains may be great for normal healthy cats, they are not ideal or recommended for diabetic, overweight of allergic cats. Always stick to a low carb, high protein diet.
Picture
Homemade or wet food
Wet cat food or canned food is considered to be slightly better and healthier compared to dry food. The moisture content in canned foods benefits the cats greatly - especially those that are not great in drinking water as required. In addition to this, I have discovered that my cat, and most cats as well, love wet foods than dry cat food. Wet canned food is flavorful and features a strong scent.
The only downside of wet cat food is that it tends to go bad fast. Additionally, it provides you with control over your cats feeding habits and keeps you from free feeding your feline. If you want even more control, try homemade cat food. With homemade cat food, you will get to choose the exact proteins to offer your cat.

Consider life stages and analyze nutrients
Pet foods especially the best diabetic foods for cats should have a nutritional adequacy statement. This statement should state whether the food is for your adult cat, cats of all ages of just kittens or pregnant felines. Before you purchase, pay keen attention to this bit. This is because kittens and cats have varying nutritional needs even without factoring in health issues.
Be keen to read and analyze these pet foods. Normally you will be looking at the moisture, fiber, protein and fat contents. Make a quick comparison with other different cat foods to ensure you pick the best diabetic cat food.

Get Help while from a Professional Vet
But even while pet foods bear the feeding guidelines, you should always remember that other important factors come into play to determine the amount of each nutrient your cat needs. A diabetic cat, for instance, requires lots of proteins and reduced carbs. How much of each will be determined by your vet after a close analysis of the health condition, size, age and breed of your cat?
A body condition analysis is necessary. Your vet will also need to determine whether the cat is underweight, overweight or within the range of normal weight. Using these elements, a vet will provide his/her professional and well-informed diabetic cat diet recommendation.

How A Pet Cat Improves Your Mental Health

12/27/2017

It’s not hard to have problems with mental health in this day and age. With emails, social media, and long commutes, you could have problems with anxiety, depression, and more. There are several ways you can address these problems including exercise and medication.

But one overlooked way to improve your mental health is getting a cat. Believe it or not, a pet cat can help you feel happier and less stressed. That’s why therapy cats are getting more recognized as a valid treatment option.

What Is A Therapy Cat?
Using animals to help people improve their mental health is an old idea, but up until recently, most people used dogs as therapy animals. Sure, dogs are very good at that. But dogs aren’t without their problems.
Picture
That’s why Petful.com explores the idea of a therapy cat. While some cats can be a bit squirmy and overly independent, most cats love human company. After all, cats are domesticated just like dogs. Having a cat around can give you moments of play, relaxation, and mental stimulation needed to improve your mental health.

Getting Help From Your Cat
But how do cats help you like this? Mental Floss lists many ways cats can help you feel more positive and happy. Having a loving creature like a pet cat can help you better cope with things that cause sadness or anxiety. Even though you cannot exactly talk over your problems with a cat, you can snuggle, play, and feel love and acceptance from them. That can do a lot for your peace of mind.

In fact, owning a cat can lower your stress levels. Humans just find something comforting from spending time with feline friends. Studies show that cat owners have less risk of dying from heart attacks and feel more connected. And because cats eat more fish than other pets, they can be better for the environment — something that can help you feel better as well.

The Establishment explains another reason cats can help improve your mental health: They are good role models for relationships. Cats are interested in you and want to spend time with you, but they are not codependent. They won’t let owners treat them poorly, and when faced with disrespect, they pull away. That can help you learn how to have healthy relationships with other humans.

Helping With Addiction Recovery

A cat can help with the day-to-day struggles with anxiety and depression, but they can do more than that. As DrugRehab.org explains, having an animal companion like a cat can help when you are in addiction recovery. Part of why is how pets are non-judgmental. Unlike your human friends, they are not going to ignore you just because you struggle with alcohol or drug abuse. They care about you regardless of any addiction. That can really help you get through a rough time.

Your cat can be a part of a formal addiction recovery program, or you can just pick up a friendly cat at your local shelter. Either way, having a pet cat can reduce your anxiety, lessen feelings of loneliness, encourage your independence, and take your mind off cravings and pain. All of these can help you avoid relapses and be successful in your addiction recovery.

Get A Pet Cat Today
It’s not like a cat can take the place of a doctor or therapist, but owning a pet cat can help improve your mental health. Whether you’re in addiction recovery or just working through a tough time in your life, search for local pet shelters in your area to find a cat that will help you get through it all.

How well do you treat your cats?

12/17/2017

Many cat owners assume that cats are entirely capable of cleaning themselves to a point they never need water or soap. Cat lick themselves, they don't groom. These two words are different altogether.

Cats are not independent or too apathetic to respond to people's assumptions that they need absolutely no assistance in "grooming." By merely covering themselves with saliva, large amounts of shedding hair are ingested. This opens the door to lots of germs and bacteria.

From Feline Leukemia Virus which are spread through cat saliva to Feline Infectious Peritonitis which are transmitted through infected stool, the cat is at a higher risk of contracting much worse if we continue 'assuming' that cats can take care of them.
Picture
Is grooming related to my cats action of peeing everywhere?
Yes but not entirely. Cats have unique smell glands which they use to either to show much interest or stay away completely.  When confronted with an especially interesting or unusual smell, a cat will drop its jaw open and let the scent waft across the vomeronasal organ in a behavior called the Flehmen response.

Scent is very vital to cats, and because of their territorial nature, they'll tend to mark they territory with almost anything. For most domesticated cats, spraying urine everywhere in the house is often the case.

So in case your cat has this habit of peeing everywhere, one of the reasons could be your cat's way of claiming particular spots in your home. The best way to handle this is through training her. You can clean your entire house with detergents not harmful but that which the cat will be uninterested with.

Research has shown that cats which have poor hygiene feel uneasy even at the very call of nature. They don't move to their litter boxes when the need to pee comes, the simply pee where they are. In the next section I am going to explain how and the importance of grooming your cat.

PROPER CAT GROOMING
The connection between cats and their claws is very essential to cats. They use them to scratch, thereby removing the old sheathed nail. This action primarily becomes an excellent form of exercise, especially to indoor cats.

How to clip your cat's nails
These acts as a significant part of keeping your cat well groomed. If your cat's nails grow too long, they can pierce into the paw pad where special scent glands lie. These will cause infections or discomfort.

To clip her nails, just grasp the paw and gently squeeze the pad so that the pins unsheathe. Look at the picture.

Then look for the pink part (often referred to as the quick) inside the base of the nail. Carefully clip off the curved section as you watch for the sensitive pink area. This part usually contains vessels and nerves, so don't cut too close to the quick.

In case you accidentally cut the quick, don't panic, no severe damage might be done. The nail will bleed as the cat will experience a moment of pain. Apply pressure to the end of the pin with a clean piece of tissue or cloth until the bleeding stops

Other than going through all of this, most people ask, 'Is it safe to disclaw my cat?'
Well, scratching is very instinctive. Disclawing the animal can alter with their instinctive behaviour, causing the cat to be stressful and result in undesirable behavioral issues. This answers the question, ‘ Why does my cat pee in my bed '.
Disclawing robs the cat of the ability to scratch and dig. Since they can no longer do this, they seek a clean soft environment to either pee or poop. Even when the litter box is clean enough.

So be sure to exhaust all other possibilities before choosing to disclaw your cat. This amputation can cause permanent change in a cat's behavioural characteristics that could be very disturbing I.e. Becoming very aggressive and eager to bite.

Picture
BRUSHING AND SCRUBBING

How do I brush my cat's teeth?
The process is straightforward and easy. The exchange diet of your cat can make the smell of the cat's breath just a bit unbearable. It can also lead to a condition, periodontal or even dental diseases.

All that can be avoided. You can purchase a cat-sized dental brush at your veterinary clinic or online. Accompany it with some feline toothpaste.

NOTE: Never use human toothpaste as it contains chemicals that may be harmful to your cats digestive system.

If you follow these steps, you won't experience difficulty in brushing your cat's teeth:

1. Hold your cat in your lap allowing her to get comfortable.
2. Gently raise her lip on one side of her mouth and begin brushing on the outer proportions of her teeth.
3. Ensure that you brush down away from the gum line. This will loosen any embedded food particles.
4. On the bottom jaw, brush up, apart from the gum line. Don't worry; the toothpaste is flavored with chicken or fish paste to enable the cat to open her mouth quickly.

Finally, How to wash your cat

Unlike the two grooming methods, washing your cat is the easiest of them all. Be calm and tender with her; this will build and maintain control of her.

Soak her from the neck down to her hinds. Be extra careful not to introduce shampoo in her eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. Most cats have an allergic reaction to this.

Lastly, wash your cats face with water or a washcloth. If fluffy, you can opt to blow dry her this makes her coat appear shiny and decent.

CONCLUSION

With all the hygienic practices and procedures, most people don't understand why their cats go outside the litter box and pee everywhere. It's all about cleanliness. Ensure that the litter box is clean on a regular basis. Also, take the cat to a vet, who will determine if the cat has any health threatening matter.

This Is Why (and How) You Need to Prepare to be a First-Time Cat Owner

10/29/2017

It’s altogether too easy to walk into a shelter or pet store, fall in love with a cuddly kitten and bring home a bundle of fur. But, that sense of joy can quickly turn into a nightmare if you’re not adequately prepared for pet ownership. Without the proper planning, home preparations, and knowledge, you won’t be able to provide your new pet with the safe, appropriate home it deserves. You might even regret an otherwise good decision had you been more prepared.

1. If You Don’t Do Your Homework, You Could End Up with the Wrong Pet

How could a pet be the wrong one? Well, for example, if you adopt a long-haired cat and have allergies, you could be miserable in a matter of minutes. Doing your homework to determine the right breed of cat for you is essential to having a long, happy relationship with your first pet.

Thankfully, MSN has curated a list of the best and worst cat breeds for people with allergies. Persian cats, Maine Coon cats, black cats, and Norwegian Forest cats are on the list to avoid. On the other hand, Sphynx cats, Siberian cats, Cornish Rex cats, Russian Blue cats, and Balinese cats are considered more hypoallergenic.

If you are not allergic to cats, you should consider characteristics of the animal you intend to adopt before taking the plunge. For example, kittens need a lot of attention and time to play, whereas older cats tend to be more solitary and low maintenance.

If you’re planning on adopting an elderly cat, here are some useful tips on modifying your home for older pets.

2. If You Don’t Prepare Your Home, Your Pet Won’t Be Safe

You may have friends who spent weeks baby-proofing their homes when their infants began rolling over and crawling. In reality, pet-proofing your home is just as important for the safety and well-being of your new four-legged baby. Even if you are adopting a more mature animal, you should prepare your home for his arrival with time to spare.

Some of the best practices for pet-proofing your home include
  • Using childproof latches to keep your cat from getting into cabinets, closets, or cupboards that contain cleaning products or food
  • Keeping medication, laundry supplies (especially detergent pods), and chemicals out of reach, even if you use childproof latches
  • Covering trash cans or keeping them out of reach
  • Eliminating loose wires or cords from electronics
  • Ensuring your plants are not poisonous
Picture
3. If You Don’t Consider How to Acclimate Your New Pet to Your Home, It Won’t Feel Comfortable

Of course, you’ll want to play with your pet and get acquainted as soon as you bring it home. But, your pet will need time to adjust to its new surroundings, and you need to help it through the transition. This is especially true if you have adopted a rescue animal who may have been abused or in a shelter for quite some time.

One of the best ways to help your pet feel at home is to give them their own space. You should have a cat bed, toys, and scratch posts or boxes in a dedicated space. You also should keep its food and water in the same place.  If your cat needs a hiding place, make a cage available to it, and allow them to remain in their cage when guests visit, especially if a dog is a potential guest.

4. Make Sure Owning  a Pet Won’t Be a Financial Hardship

The idea of a fast friendship with a new pet can easily overshadow the importance of assessing your ability to afford this pet. Do the math first. Can you afford food, toys, vaccinations, and random visits to the vet? If the answer is no, you should forgo getting an animal that you might have to give up. If the answer is yes, then you are in the perfect position to welcome a new cat into your home.

Becoming a first-time pet owner will be more enjoyable for you and your new cat if you do your homework first, prepare your home, and take steps to acclimate it to your home. This sets the stage for the friendship of a lifetime.

Keep your cats indoors during October

10/8/2017

We enjoy the fall with pumpkins, spiced teas and lattes, colorful leaves and orange decorations. Unfortunately it is sad that some people prefer to hurt pets during this time of the year. Make sure you keep your pets inside, not only they'll be warmer but the risk of losing your beloved cat increases during this period. Some shelters have a "no black cats adoption policy" before Halloween. They could just be used as Halloween props and then abandoned. Or much worse. Ritual sacrifice still exists, there are stories in the newspapers every now and then describing horrible scenes. Some could be dismissed as urban legends but the possibility is out there.

For all those reasons, please keep your cats indoors during October. Your neighbors might be wonderful but the traffic of strangers around Halloween increases. This makes it unsafe for cats to be outside, specially gentle cats who do not fear humans.
On Halloween night you might want to keep your cats in a quiet room to avoid the constant visits and ringing. Even the quietest and most social cat becomes upset with so much traffic, costumes and excitement.

You still don't have a cat!?

Cats are beautiful and amazing creatures. They will keep you company and will add quality to your life. Cats are very easy to care for and maintain.

  • Housebreaking takes about a minute. Just tuck a litter box with clean litter in an out-of-the-way spot in your home, and voila! Tiger is fully house trained!
  • You don’t have to give up being a clean freak. No need to worry about a dirty, smelly kitty rolling around on your carpet or your furniture. Healthy felines keep themselves clean from head to toe.
  • No guilt trips. Unlike your dog, who will drop his tail and look at you with a forlorn expression when you can’t stop what you’re doing to play with him, if you need to put your kitty off for a bit, she’ll wander away, not seeming to mind. You’ll find her later stretched out contentedly in her favorite napping spot.
  • You can stay warm, even in the dead of winter. As most folks owned by cats can attest, there’s nothing that compares to the coziness of a kitty curled up in your lap

How often should you take your cat to the vet

9/5/2017

Many cat owners wonder about this. If my cat is strictly an indoor cat, why should we take him to the vet every year? Regular checkups are an opportunity to check the overall wellbeing of your cat. Potential problems could be detected and be picked up early.

A kitten should complete the regular vaccination schedule. This includes a series of shots and booster shots that last around 12 months (it involves 2/3 visits to the vet). Please talk to your vet about mandatory shots and decide which shots should your kitten receive. New York State Law requires mandatory rabies shots. More details about vaccinations can be found here:

http://www.kittyinny.com/blog/vaccination-schedule-for-cats
Picture
Indoor cats should be spayed/neutered. The recommended age for the procedure is between the 10th and the 24th week of age.

You should bring your cat to the vet if you see any of the following signs: pain or discomfort, blood in urine, difficulty breathing, pain or difficulty when going to the litter box, loss of weight, drinks too much, you feel lumps or bumps, has an open wound, stops eating or vomits more than once a day.

Reviews.com has an interesting study about pet insurance. The best pet insurance offers coverage that’s broad enough for whatever care your pet needs — with high enough limits to cushion you in a worst-case scenario.http://www.reviews.com/pet-insurance/

What should your cat eat?

8/10/2017

The old saying "you are what you eat" applies to cats too! Food and nutrition is the key to a prime health and longevity for cats.

Cats must eat a lot of meat for protein and fat. They are carnivores. A cat's system is not designed to process carbohydrates, that is why a diet loaded with carbs can lead to obesity and health issues (like diabetes).

When selecting your cat food let your vet guide you. You should always make sure the label says it meets the standards set by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). That ensures the food meets the minimum nutritional needs for your cat. You can ignore the terms "gourmet", "premium", "natural" which have no standard definition.

Cats are finicky eaters. If your cat doesn't like the food you should try with a different flavor or brand. Cats can go on a hunger strike rather that eat something they don't like. A cat that doesn't eat can suffer liver failure and get fatally ill. If you do the switch from one food to another, introduce the new food gradually and make sure it doesn't cause any gastrointestinal upsets (such as diarrhea).

Indoor cats have a tendency to gain weight. Ask your vet about feeding portions and stick to them (although they may seem little to you). That way your cat will keep a healthy weight. Cats like to eat small meals during the day. If you leave food out your cat may come and graze when they feel the need to nibble. You can put out half in the morning and half when you return from work.

Don't give too many snacks to your pet! Just like with people, too many snacks are not healthy (cat snacks are usually too salty).

You can find detailed information about cat food brands in this report by reviews.com:
http://www.reviews.com/cat-food/

If you need to board your cat with Kitty in NY you should provide the food. We also require the feeding instructions (portions and times per day). Give us as much information as possible so the assigned caregiver can follow your feeding routine. Your cat will be happy when he receives the same food during the boarding.

Kitty in NY also provides cat sitting visits. A professional caregiver will visit your cat in your apartment and provide the same feeding portions and follow your routine. You will receive a photo/video update after each visit. Contact us with more information about the service you need.

You will be able to enjoy your time away from New York without worrying about your cat.

Cat memories: Simo

7/9/2017

All cat lovers cherish memories of their first cat, their grandmother's cat, the neighbor's cat, that special cat that started their fascination for these amazing felines who share human's lifes. We asked our caregivers and clients to share with us some of these memories.

I had always liked animals in general (and cats were one of my favorite pets) but I had not decided to have one of my own. I was young, unstable, still trying to figure out where to head or what to do with my life. I was full of disconnected dreams and paths leading to nowhere. The 20's were definately a difficult time. I fell in love many times. It was at the beginning of the love story of my life that I finally crossed paths wth my first cat. Simo was a furry ball not much bigger than my fist when my lover brought it home. He had found her in a box, left in the street. The kitten was trembling, cold, scared. She must have been around 4 weeks old. She became my first cat. I did not really know what I was getting into. It was all part of falling in love: you don't measure the consequences, you just jump in and let go.

It was hard, it was frustrating. Simo was a street cat, I lived in a tiny studio in the center of the city. We had to set the rules. She won most of the times. She was very smart and she loved me. She was destructive, extremely squitish and had litter box issues. We all invested time and efforts, we did not let her down. She was a lucky cat, as happy as she could be. She could win your heart if you had the patience. She was a sweet scared kitty. I got lost in those big eyes, marvelled at the touch of her silky hair, melted when she meowed asking for attention. I did not know much about cats, it was like an intensive training on cat's problems.

I cherish this memory: it was a summer evening, Saturday night. The studio was cool (it did not get much sun light). I could hear a TV from the apartment upstairs. Simo entered the room climbing up the window facing the small courtyard (she loved being outside). I was laying on the couch, reading and chilling, thinking about my Saturday plans for the night. I greeted her and she came right to me and curled by my side. It's not a great annecdote, it stayed in my mind because I wrote a note about it. It felt special in a way. Simo was a special cat. A challenge in so many ways. I became a different person, I grew up, she was there, part of it, like so many things you do not expect. Important things are never planned, they just happen.

How To Treat Motion Sickness In Cats?

5/10/2017

Linda Butts, the girl behind Pawsome Talk granted permission to share one of their blog articles.

Dogs called as the man’s best friend, loyal friend, and lot more terms added to show their loyalty. However, cats are the cutest animal of all. Their intelligence, lovely behavior with the owners and cute crawl they do. Of course, our heart is taken away by their pretty activities.
While traveling in a car, sometimes humans feel sick. Not only humans the dogs to have the same feeling. Yes, the motion sickness makes our day worse with vomiting and other bad body condition. Just like dogs, cats also have the same hurdle. Cats also have the gastrointestinal distress.
The gastrointestinal distress and it is a usual thing seen in cats. Here we are going to see on how to treat the motion sickness in cats.

Motion Sickness in Cats
Most of the time, we travel by car more than any other mode of transportation. Thus, we are going to the see the car sickness in cats, the symptoms, and the remedies to make them feel comfortable. It will help you to spend your vacation with no worries about your cat’s illness due to the voyage. \

Symptoms Observed in Cats Cause of the Motion Sickness
Just like humans, cats also vomit when they fell sick while traveling. Yes, it is the same old story for the motion sickness.
  • Cats lick their lips when they feel sick while traveling.
  • There will be a heavy drooling in their mouth.
  • The cats will produce some sounds technically called as vocalization.
  • You can observe consternation in your cat.
  • A continuous defecation occurs.
Picture
Causes for the Cat’s Car Sickness
The motion sickness or the car sickness may accompany a sensitive inner gear, which legalizes stability and the balance of the cat. The unstable motion or the lack of balance causes them the vomiting sensation.

Since the cats have the vomiting sensation and a continuous saliva secretion, they often lick their lips. Obviously, when we travel to a strange place or an unfamiliar zone, we do feel bit insecure. Similarly, the kitties also feel the same. Yes, the cats feel anxiety and stress because they are leaving their home.

Some Tips that you can follow to reduce your Cat’s Car Sickness

Though the sickness won't follow throughout cat’s life span and cause major health problems to your cat, it will be hectic when we clean the dirt and all the mess of our cat. Let this mess be aside. However, the pet animals are also a part of our family and so here are some tips to reduce their motion sickness.
  • We use our travel carrier to put our beloved cat to stay inside safe during the journey. Though we see for their safety, it, in turn, reflects as a health problem or disorder.
  • So you can leave the door of the carrier open and leave some toys for the kitty to play. It can divert their mind to play than their attention towards vomiting or any uneasiness.
  • Take the steps gradually. An immediate change in the environment to the car cause an upset in their mind and body. So, you can first take your cat into the car with the engine start.
  • Then after some days of practice, you can do the same procedure. This time you have to turn the engine on but the car should be immobile. Then this practice can lead you to a free adventure with your dear cat without any interruption.
  • Make the travel as if you are at home. The more the cats are comfortable, the more they uneasiness goes away. To keep our car or your voyage as if your home, you can bring some things from home to make your cats feel as if they are at home.
  • Make your cat fast for four to six hours. When you travel with your cat, skip the meal so that the possibilities of vomiting is less.
  • Consult a veterinarian before your journey. The veterinarian can give some cat vaccination like Cerenia. It is a drug especially given for dogs but not it effective with cats too for the motion/car sickness.
  • Here come the newton’s first law. The law of inertia, the unwillingness of the object to move from its position. We look forward while moving and we will feel better than seated in the opposite direction. Similarly, the cats also feed the same thing. Thus, place the door of the carrier towards the steering of the car or any mode of transportation.
  • Use some of the natural remedies. The homeopathic medicines have the natural extract to reduce your cat’s motion sickness. The consumption of 30c potency dosage, fifteen minutes before your travel and a regular intake of the dosage for every thirty to sixty minutes. This dosage obviously reduces the vomiting, anxiety, and nausea.
  • Try an altered car. While talking about the cars, the shock-observer varies to every model in the car. A car with good shock-observer can reduce the shakes in the car and can have a peaceful ride.
  • Along with the shock-observer, a car that has a free air flow interior will reduce all the vomiting sensation. Trying a different car can reduce the anxiety, stress, and vomit of your cat.
  • Don’t travel for too long hours. Give a break often while traveling with your cat. Your pet should believe that this journey is for a short time and then we shall have a break to relax.
  • It will reduce the stress with the cat. Along with it, the break that you give will help your cat to refresh itself with fresh air.
  • Quiet down with some medication. For a long time, the veterinarians prescribe Acepromazine. It helps in relaxing the cat from the anxiety, vomiting, and nausea. The medication works within few minutes, and it is a safe prescription for your cat.
Once you reached the destination of your journey, take your cat out from the carrier so that they can move free from the tired travel. Later after some time, it is time for the cat to poop. Once your cat finishes the business feed them.

How Many Teeth Do Cats Have? What You Need To Know

3/8/2017

This article belongs to Tinpaw.com. Kitty in NY was kindly asked by the founder Diana Hutchinson to share its content in our blog: http://tinpaw.com/how-many-teeth-does-a-cat-have/

Teeth are considered as an important feature of your cat’s life. Not only it is to catch their prey, but it serves many functions like grooming and taking care of their litters. As it has many aspects, have you stopped and wondered how many teeth do cats have?
It seems like it’s only now that cat owners had started to give attention to dental care in cats especially when the internet exploded the news that it loves cat videos and memes. But one has to know that dental awareness and hygiene in cats can have a huge effect on the tooth and other organs of the cat’s body also.
Here, we’ll show you through all features of a cat’s tooth – from how many teeth do cats have to tips on taking care of your feline’s teeth.

Picture
How many teeth do cats have?
Do kittens have teeth when they are born?
Kittens are born without teeth, but after their birth, they start developing the deciduous teeth which are also called baby or milk teeth. The teething is followed by incisors, canines, and premolars when they grow older. But kittens don’t get to develop molars just yet. See a little timeline below.
Baby teeth
  • Two weeks: At two weeks of a kitten’s birth, the deciduous incisors start coming out of the gums.
  • Three to four weeks: Within three to four weeks, the canines also start appearing.
  • Four to six weeks: Four to six weeks later, the premolars on the lower jaw usually start appearing.
  • Eight weeks: Your kitten will have all of the deciduous teeth after eight weeks has passed from its birth.
  • Three to four months: The kittens usually have their permanent incisors when they are three and a half to four months old.
  • Five months: When your cat reaches five months, its four canines should pop out.
  • Six months: Six months, the ten premolars have grown.
How many teeth do cats have? The deciduous teeth are 26 in total number having twelve incisors three on upper while three on lower jaw in each side, four canines one on upper and one on lower jaw on the each side, six upper premolars and four lower premolars.
When your kitten is teething, the pain will bother your little feline friend. Its gums will become sore, and your pet will be restless and uncomfortable.
Things to do during kitten’s teething period
  • Provide it with soft food like low carb cat food or kibble in small pieces as they do not require to be chewed forcefully.
  • Provide the cats with soft chews and toys. The chews are available to a great variety like nylon and rubber. Make sure it's non-toxic. Don’t play with toys quite strongly with your kitten.
  • You can place your chewers inside the fridge for it to become a bit cold. It can bring comfort to the sore gums and erupting teeth when your kitten plays with it.
  • There can be a problem in bringing out the teeth like misalignment, crowding, and intense pain. Visit the vet to make sure your cat’s teeth are aligned.
  • Avoid brushing your kitten’s teeth during this phase.
How many adult teeth cats have?
Remember one thing: when a cat undergoes teething for the deciduous teeth, it conceives only 26 teeth. When your cat reaches its adult stage, its permanent teeth will develop a complete set of 30 teeth.
Do cats suffer gum problems?
Tooth cavities and swollen gums can also happen to your cat. Main symptoms like bad breath or excessive drooling can, in fact, link to another disease to the heart, kidneys or more. Your cat’s dental problems can start showing signs during your kitty’s third year.
Sadly, most cat owners only notice it when their pets start losing a tooth. How many teeth do cats have won’t matter anymore when they start to fall off. Some clues that will tell you that your cat is having problems include:
  • Drooling
  • Bad breath
  • Loss of appetite
  • Quickly gets hurt when touched around the mouth area
  • Eats food a bit differently
  • Loss of tooth
When that happens, your cat might be suffering one of the following diseases:
  • Stomatitis or inflammation of the mouth
  • Plaque and tooth decay
  • Inflammation of the pulp or the gums
Fact: Did you know that some cats are in need of braces? Just like humans, a misalignment in their teeth could lead to lockjaw or open mouth jaw locking. Severe cases can have their mouth operated.
Picture
Teeth care for the cats
Cats may not enjoy you cleaning their mouth, but they need it. Dental problems are one of the things vets can find in cats whenever an owner brings them to an animal hospital.
  • Provide it with an intensive care to keep its translucent teeth healthy.
  • Use treats and foods that protect against developing the tartar and plaque.
  • Brush the teeth of your pet regularly otherwise; it may give out a bad odor whenever it opens its mouth. Use a soft brush.
  • Let your pet eat only low carb cat food.
  • Give it soft toys.
  • Regular visits to the vet.
You treat your cat’s teeth like how you treat yours – a brush, treatment, and a change in eating habits. If you remember how many teeth do cats have, we say, once it’s permanent, it’s permanent. Once your kitty loses a tooth, it won’t grow back.
You don’t want your cat to suffer in silence, do you? Show your pet some love as they have done for you! And if we missed on anything, just let us know in the comments.

Male or female?

1/30/2017

Which one makes a better pet? Males or females? This is still one of the questions many cat people discuss. There are strong opinions on both sides. After some consideration the bottom line is that personality is what really matters.

Let's review some of the debating points:
  • Many of the arguments are based on non fixed animal behaviors. All indoor only cats should be neutered or spayed. A neutered/spayed cat makes a better pet! Non fixed males tend to roam further and are very territorial (spraying to mark the boundaries). They can also be more aggressive towards new cats and get into fights that can lead to very expensive vet bills. Intact females go into heat every few months, their sole purpose in life is to breed and multiply. It has a toll on her health and her personality won't be loving, all they want is to be alone and have some peace...
  • A neutered male will make a loving pet. They tend to be (by nature) more territorial, but they are usually calmer and happier. Family, breed, early socialization are also important factors. And not all cat owners want a lap cat, some prefer a more independent pet!
  • A spayed female might redirect some of her mother instincts towards the human who shares her apartment. It was not a meditated choice but all my cats have been females. I have had very sweet cat companions and some that were more challenging but all in all, cat people understand cats and respect their personality. That is what makes cats special, each of them will develop a routine, a character, will have good and bad days, like us, humans. When you get a skittish cat to trust you, look for you and to sit close to you on the couch to watch your favorite tv show can be very rewarding!
Picture
  • Males and female cats have different nutrition and space needs. Females tend to be happier in smaller apartments. Males who have enjoyed a bigger territory migh have a difficult time adjusting to a minuscule studio apartment. Levels (shelves, tables, chairs) are a big help, cats understand each level is a new territory which can be of great help when living in a small apartment.

Kitty in NY helps male and female cats. We provide the best in-home boarding and cat sitting solutions in the city! Your cat/s will be in good hands while you're away. Contact us and send us more details about the service you need. We'll be glad to help you with your cat.

Cats on Halloween

10/26/2016

We love black cats!

8/16/2016

On August 17th we celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day. Did you know that Black cats in the USA are often put to sleep and the least adoptable? Centuries of rationalism and we still neglect these beautiful cats. Black cats make great pets, you can ask anyone who's lucky to have one. And they are gorgeous. At Kitty in NY we have many black cats as kitty guests.
Picture
We'd like to share this poem about a black cat, peacefully resting on a Brooklyn stoop:

                                A black cat
                                On top of the stoop
                                Gazing quietly
                                Life go by

                                A black cat
                                Sleeping on the steps
                                Purring peacefully
                                Simply being a cat

                                A black cat
                                Grooming
                                Licking himself
                                Master of routine

                                Black cat
I get lost in your eyes
                                And for an instant
                                I'm happy

                                Peaceful

A cat on the bed

7/11/2016

A cat on the bed
Stretching in oblivion
Getting her checklist done

Would you please show me!
Just a touch of cat knowledge
To get rid of commitments and guilt
How to be more selfish, to have less feelings?

Damned school!
Made me a better citizen
but in exchange I suffer this never ending worry
Guilty of being born
of breathing, of feeling pleasure, of being who I am

Help me kitty
You do understand
the greatness of being yourself
Your only obligation: to Be
your agenda for the day: the next minute
your memory: non existant
your law: your instinct

Sleep sweet kitty
I'll take care of everything

Is travelling with your cat a good idea?

6/21/2016

Kitty in NY recommends in-home cat boarding for long services instead of travelling with your pet. Cats do not like long trips and will do well in a temporary home until you get back. Avoiding the stress of the trip will be greatly appreciated by your favorite feline. We have clients who boarded their cats for 3/6 months , even for a year. Our caregivers will send you regular updates during the whole boarding period. Contact us and tell us what services you need.

For short weekends or one week trips cat sitting visits to your apartment will save your beloved cat a lot of stress and anxiety.

If you need to take your cat on a car, train or air trip you should ensure it is comfortably secure in the right carrier.

You may give your cat the Bach Flower Essence "Rescue Remedy" to help it with the stress of traveling. Give a few drops in his/her water every day. The flower essence will help your cat remain calm.

It can be dangerous (and ilegal) to have a cat loose in your car – it cause an accident by becoming entangled with the driver. If a window or door was opened the cat could escape and get lost.

You need to invest in a carrier which is strong and easy to clean. Cats can urinate/defecate (or vomit) during long trips. Spray the inside of the carrier and car with Feliway before you're ready to go. Feliway sprayt mimics the pheromones cats leave when they are comfortable and relaxed.

Place the carrier where it will be secure if you have to use the brake suddenly but where it has a good air flow (not under luggage in the back of the car). You can secure the carrier behind the front seats or use the seat belt to hold it securely on the seat. The cat could meow initially or even throughout the whole journey – speak calmly and reassuringly to it but do not let it out of its carrier. The meowing will probably drive you mad but the cat is unlikely to be suffering; just voicing its dislike of the situation! Eventually the constant motion and noise of the car will probably induce your cat to sleep.
Picture
If you intend to travel by plane with your cat then you need to plan well ahead. You have a wide selection of airlines and how they transport your cat may influence your choice. Some airlines allow cats to travel with their owners (there is a weight limit and the size/type of carrier should be taken into account, airlines have all instructions regarding pet travel directions on their websites)  Sometimes cats have to travel in a special part of the hold which is heated and pressurized. Their fee varies from airline to airline, you should contact them to receive a quote.

Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian. This health certificate should meet the requirements of your state or country of destination, as well as your airline carrier. Be sure to check on the time restrictions. Certificates often need to be obtained within 2 weeks of the flight. Carry the health certificate and your cat's vaccination certificates with you.

Place identification and contact details on the outside and inside the crate. Print 'Live Animal' on the top and sides of the crate.

Clip your pet's nails. This will prevent breakage of a nail if the pet scratches at the crate door.

When possible select a direct flight so that there is no need for your cat to be disturbed for transfers. This may also affect the timing of the flight you choose.

If you know your cat is a bad traveller and has previously been sick or agitated during a trip  it is worth consulting your vet about giving a sedative. However, some cats actually become more agitated with tranquillisers. You should limit the use of tranquilizers as drugs can alter the way cats adjust to temperature changes. Cats also recover from the journey faster when not sedated.

Remember to check all the regulations and requirements if you are taking your cat from one country to another. Preventive health requirements such as rabies vaccination (or even quarantine) will vary. Failure to comply with all requirements could be time consuming and expensive.

In-home cat boarding services offer cats individual attention, your cat/s would be the only pets in the apartment. They can also keep up with your pet’s regular routine — including eating schedules, grooming necessities, and daily playtime requirements — so your cat has less anxiety while you’re away.

Kitty in NY isn’t just about connecting owners and caregivers but also ensuring quality through caregiver reference checks, reviews, personal interviews, online training and follow up during the boarding:
  1. Is the caregiver’s home safe? Before you head out to tour Europe, head over to the caregiver's apartment that you’re considering to confirm your cat will be placed in a cat friendly, secure home. The meet and greet is free, it is the best way to ensure the caregiver we selected is your best match. We can propose several caregivers until you find your match.
  2. Are the caregivers responsible and reliable? We meet and interview all our caregivers. They have been cat owners that for different reasons do not own a cat at the moment. They have the experience of taking care of a cat and enjoy cat company.
  3. Our caregivers have no pets of their own, your cat will be the only pet in the apartment. This helps reduce the stress of your cat and the time to get adjusted to the new environment.
  4. What’s the daily routine of your cat? If your cat needs his pill at a certain time of day, or likes to play with you before dinner time, be sure that the in-home boarding care will be accommodating following your cat's routine. Consider feeding, medication, physical needs and hygienic needs. All those details will be included in the contract.
  5. Provide full disclosure. In addition to interviewing the in-home cat caregiver, providing an out-of-town contact number, it’s a cat parent’s job to be open and transparent about a cat’s needs. Share as much info about your cat’s personality, needs and medical history as possible to ensure your pet has a fabulous time on his vacation!

The importance of playing with your cat

Interactive play time is a very powerful tool to build a strong bond with your cat. It is great for trust-building, exercise, release of energy, avoid cat boredom and depression. A cat who receives a daily dose of play time is a happier cat. Don't overlook the importance of activity, it can avoid many behavior issues.

A key ingredient in interactive activity with your cat is YOU. You may have a variety of cat toys in your apartment but they are dead toys without you. The concept behind any cat toy is to allow your cat to act like the hunter she was born to be. When you move a fishing pole type toy as a prey, the target at the end of the string will slide, dart, creep around the room, waking your cat's hunting instinct.

How you move the toy is important. Don't move it too fast or right in front of her face. That's not how felines hunt in the wild. They stalk their preys. Move the toy slowly across her visual filed. Cats cannot run for long periods of time, you should make her run but allow her time to catch her breath. You should always let her catch her prey at least once per session. The game needs to be fun for the cat, not a frustrating experience. End the game slowling down the speed of the toy and letting her play with the "dead" prey for a minute.

You should have a play session every day. It doesn't need to be long, once or twice a day for 15 minutes will do. The benefits are much greater than the time you invest. Your cat will be a healtheir/happier feline. Those sessions develop her confidence, increase trust and relieve stress.

In between games, you should always store interactive toys. Do not leave them out. You want it to be special and most imporant, you don't want your cat to chew on worn out parts that could be dangerous if swallowed. There are some "solo" toys your cat might enjoy on his own (mice, puzzle feeders, those that are safe when you're not around).
