We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Hi! My name is Louis and I've been taking care of cats since I was a kid. We've been helping local organizations such as the ASPCA foster and care for cats while they are waiting to be placed in a permanent home, and would gladly help cat sit in between volunteer foster assignments. We live in the Whitestone/Bayside area of Queens in a one bedroom coop with plenty of screened windows for curious cats to look out from!
If you are looking for a temporary home for your cat, Louis and his mom could be the perfect company for your pet until you return. Contact us and send more details about your cat and the service you need. We'll get back to you as soon as possible.

The caregiver was incredibly kind, helpful and responsive. He updated us with photos almost daily and allowed us to feel like our kitty was in good hands while we were away for 2 weeks. The caregiver was flexible with the drop-off and pick-up times. Our kitty came back happy and healthy. We will 1000% use this service again. We are very happy cat parents.

We would like to introduce you to some of our caregivers. KITTY in NY has selected over the years some outstanding people who have one thing in common: they LOVE cats!

Hi! My name is Celine and I’m currently a student majoring in Neuroscience at Columbia University. I live in a cozy studio in the Financial District with a safe and sunny window sill for cats to sunbathe on!

I spend most of my time studying at home and watching documentaries. I have a light schedule this semester so I have the luxury of chilling at home and playing with a potential kitty! I have had a loving cat myself (black rescue kitty) for 8 years. She lives at my parents’ house and I miss her very much. She’s even been on international flights so I am great at taking care of anxious cats. My apartment is very safe and clean: no plants or breakable glass, no rats or bugs, and many surfaces for cats to lounge on!
If you need a temporary home for your cat Celline might be available to help you. Boarding is perfect for your mid-long term needs, you bring your cat to the caregiver´s apartment where he/she will be the only pet! You will receive periodic updates during the service. Contact us and send more details about the service you're looking for, we'll be glad to help you.

Hi, you can call me Youyou! I love animals, especially cats, but I currently don’t have the capacity to have one of my own, so I’d love to take care of yours. I grew up with dogs and haven’t had a cat of my own, but my old roommates had two cats, and I became one of their favorite humans. I lived with them for four years and miss them a lot! After my roommates moved out to the same neighborhood, I took care of their cats whenever they were out of town. I’ve also pet-sat a lot for my other friends and teachers from acting school. PS: Watching cat memes and videos is one of my favorite daily activities.

Cat memories: Simo

8/17/2024

All cat lovers cherish memories of their first cat, their grandmother's cat, the neighbor's cat, that special cat that started their fascination for these amazing felines who share human's lifes. We asked our caregivers and clients to share with us some of these memories.

I had always liked animals in general (and cats were one of my favorite pets) but I had not decided to have one of my own. I was young, unstable, still trying to figure out where to head or what to do with my life. I was full of disconnected dreams and paths leading to nowhere. The 20's were definately a difficult time. I fell in love many times. It was at the beginning of the love story of my life that I finally crossed paths wth my first cat. Simo was a furry ball not much bigger than my fist when my lover brought it home. He had found her in a box, left in the street. The kitten was trembling, cold, scared. She must have been around 4 weeks old. She became my first cat. I did not really know what I was getting into. It was all part of falling in love: you don't measure the consequences, you just jump in and let go.

It was hard, it was frustrating. Simo was a street cat, I lived in a tiny studio in the center of the city. We had to set the rules. She won most of the times. She was very smart and she loved me. She was destructive, extremely squitish and had litter box issues. We all invested time and efforts, we did not let her down. She was a lucky cat, as happy as she could be. She could win your heart if you had the patience. She was a sweet scared kitty. I got lost in those big eyes, marvelled at the touch of her silky hair, melted when she meowed asking for attention. I did not know much about cats, it was like an intensive training on cat's problems.

I cherish this memory: it was a summer evening, Saturday night. The studio was cool (it did not get much sun light). I could hear a TV from the apartment upstairs. Simo entered the room climbing up the window facing the small courtyard (she loved being outside). I was laying on the couch, reading and chilling, thinking about my Saturday plans for the night. I greeted her and she came right to me and curled by my side. It's not a great annecdote, it stayed in my mind because I wrote a note about it. It felt special in a way. Simo was a special cat. A challenge in so many ways. I became a different person, I grew up, she was there, part of it, like so many things you do not expect. Important things are never planned, they just happen.

Meow! My name is Carol Zaydel, and I was born and raised in South Brooklyn. I currently work as an ELA Teacher in New York City, and I love it ! I've always wanted to be a teacher, and I believe that as educators it is also our duty to cultivate love, respect, and open communication in all areas of our lives. I love taking care of kitties, and I have experience living with two different kitties pictured; Blondie and Squeak. They've since moved out, but I want to continue to provide my genuine love and understanding to your cats. I pay close attention to detail, ensuring that I can cater to each cat’s specific needs, whether it’s maintaining their diet, providing them with a comfortable space, or giving them the right amount of attention and playtime. I’m reliable and committed, so pet owners can trust me to take excellent care of their beloved companions, making sure their cats feel safe and happy while they’re away. Plus, I’m comfortable handling different feline temperaments, which allows me to create a calm and stress-free environment for all cats in my care.

Celebrating “Black Cat Appreciation Day” every August 17th

8/1/2024

Black cats has been blamed for most of the wrongs of the  world. Poor black kitties! Even today, black cats bring to mind images of witchcraft and magic tales. Literature and fiction pictured cats and witches in countless mistery tales. Edgar Allan Poe wrote about one and Hollywood has made many movies about them.

For a long time, black cats were regarded as mysterious creatures with supernatural powers and were associated with witches. The association between bad luck and black cats dates back to the middle of the fourteenth century. It’s not known exactly why cats became associated with the Devil in the Middle Ages, but the belief was so persistent that they were all exterminated during the Black Death pandemic around 1348 CE. The killing of the cats only worsened the plague, which was spread via rodents.

In the middle-ages in Europe black cat’s status started to go downhill as they began to be associated with witches. The hysteria of witches practicing black magic had hit Europe and alley cats were often cared for and fed by lonely old ladies later accused of witchery.

Their cat companions, some of which were black ones, were deemed guilty of witchery by association. This belief was taken up a notch when a folklore involving a father and son in Lincolnshire in the 1560′s became quite popular. The pair were said to have been traveling one night when a black cat crossed their path. Naturally, they did what any guys would do, they threw rocks at the furry feline until the injured creature scurried out into a woman’s house, who was suspected of being a witch in the town. The next day, the father and son came across the same woman and noticed she was bruised and believed that was more than just a coincidence. From that day on in Lincolnshire, it was thought that witches could turn into black cats at night.
Here are a few cat superstitions from different countries
  • America: It is bad luck to see a white cat at night
  • Scottland: A strange black cat on your porch brings prosperity
  • Italy: A cat sneezing is a good omen for everyone who hears it.
  • America: Dreaming of a white cat means good luck.
  • Netherlands: In the Netherlands, cats were not allowed in rooms where private family discussions were going on. The Dutch believed that cats would definitely spread gossips around the town.
  • Egypt: It was once believed that the life-giving rays of the sun were kept in a  cat's eyes at night.
  • Ireland: To kill a cat brings seventeen years of bad luck
Black cats are loved and appreciated nowadays. At Kitty in NY we have many black cat clients. We love black cats too! Who couldn't appreciate the beauty of these animals? Our caregivers located in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens would love to take care of your cat while you're away. Please contact us in advance to confirm availability. We'll be glad to help you.
