The Magical Powers of Cats: What They Sense That We Don’t

1/28/2026

For thousands of years, cats have been surrounded by an aura of mystery. Worshipped in Ancient Egypt, feared in medieval Europe, and endlessly admired (and misunderstood) today, cats have always seemed to move between worlds: ours and another we can’t quite access.

Many cat guardians swear their cats can sense things long before humans do. Emotions. Illness. Even death. Is it magic, instinct, or something in between?

The truth is: while science explains part of it, there’s still something deeply uncanny about how cats read the world.
Picture
Cats may have a reputation for being aloof, but they are extremely sensitive to emotional shifts. They notice subtle changes in:
  • tone of voice
  • body language
  • breathing patterns
  • routines and energy levels
A stressed, grieving, or anxious person often moves differently, speaks differently, and even smells different. Cats pick up on all of this.

Many people report that their cat becomes unusually affectionate during periods of sadness or emotional pain, staying close, sleeping on their chest, or following them from room to room.

There are countless anecdotes of cats behaving differently around people who later discover they’re ill. Some cats repeatedly lie on the same part of a person’s body. Others become restless, vocal, or protective.

Science offers a partial explanation:
  • Cats have an extraordinary sense of smell and may detect chemical changes in the body.
  • Illness can subtly alter body temperature, posture, and movement.
  • Changes in routine due to fatigue or pain are quickly noticed.
While cats are not medical diagnostic tools, their behavior can sometimes act as an early warning sign that something isn’t right.
Picture
Perhaps the most unsettling stories involve cats sensing when someone is approaching the end of their life.

Hospice workers have documented cases where cats consistently choose to stay with patients in their final hours, even when they normally avoid strangers. One famous example is Oscar, a therapy cat who lived in a nursing home and accurately predicted the deaths of dozens of residents by curling up beside them shortly before they passed.

Cats sleep deeply, wake suddenly, stare at corners, chase invisible things, and sit in silence for hours. They exist comfortably in stillness and uncertainty — states humans often struggle with.

This may be why they seem magical to us.

At Kitty in NY, we understand that cats are not “easy pets” or “low maintenance.” They are sensitive, perceptive beings who form deep bonds with their people and their environment.

That’s why our cat boarding and sitting services are designed to respect their emotional and physical needs. Whether your cat prefers the comfort of familiar surroundings or thrives in a calm, cat-only boarding space, we provide experienced, attentive care that honors their routines, personalities, and well-being. Contact us and send more details about your cat/s and the service you need.

Hello, my name is Robin Dann. I have always loved animals as a kid. As an adult I had multiple cats of my own, mostly rescued strays. At the moment I do not own any pet but I do miss having them around! I have a cat-sitting experience and look forward to making it a regular part of my life. I live alone in a comfortable one-bedroom apartment, work part-time in a design studio and don’t go out much, so your pet will get lots of attention and play in your absence. The one bedroom apartment with plenty screened windows is in a doorman building. Apartment is on second floor. Building is located in Midwood neighborhood in Brooklyn NY.

If you are located around the Midwood neighborhood in south Brooklyn, Robin might be available to take care of your cat/s while you are away. Contact us and send more details about the service you need, we'll be glad to help you.

Robin watched my cats for over a year, and I could not have asked for a better sitter. She not only kept them safe and well-cared for, but she also truly loved them and provided them with a home. I am eternally grateful to her. If I should ever need a catsitter again, I know I can count on her to provide them with the very best care.

Robin was great! It is very clear that she deeply cares about the well being of her feline visitors and goes the extra length to give them all the attention and cuddles they require. My cat is a big cuddler and Robin rose to the challenge. She made him feel safe and happy in her home

This was my first time leaving Coco for boarding. He had just turned two and was recently neutered, and as an extremely cautious cat parent, I was very hesitant. Coco is also a rare British Shorthair whom I invested a lot in, so it was important for both of us to feel completely safe. I specifically did not want a traditional boarding facility where he would be caged around other cats and dogs, and instead wanted a sitter where he would be the only cat. I was fortunate to find KittyinNY, who was able to accommodate this request and match me with Yana.

My work schedule was very unpredictable, and I had to change my requested dates a few times (which I wouldn’t recommend), but KittyinNY was still able to work with me. Yana lives about 40 minutes away, so I would likely only use her again if absolutely necessary due to the distance. That said, she was wonderful with Coco. She sent daily videos, and he looked happy and comfortable. I was away for two weeks over the holidays and felt at ease knowing Coco was in her care.

Linyana is experienced with cats and was good to my foster boy. She sent daily photo updates and he seemed to get on well with her. She was also very understanding and helpful. Your agency was responsive and found a placement with fairly short notice. I will definitely recommend Kitty in NY to other cat owners and use your service the next time I need it!

Yana was very kind and communicative. She took great care of my cat. I would suggest she gets a travel litter box for her apartment. If i didn't know she didn’t have one I would have brought one w me.

Yana was lovely. She sent us pics of our furry baby and kept us well informed. Gideon was very shy at first but she made him feel safe. After a day or two he came out to explore his environment.
